is it your first ? If so that is really normal.

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 04/06/2008 13:01

yes it is....phew, thank you...I know a few girls from another board and two real life friends at same point as me and they've all been feeling movement for weeks!

Hi, I'm pg with my first, and remember having a midwife appt at 20 wks where she asked if I'd felt any movement. To be honest, I was the same as you, I couldn't feel anything definite, but then literally within a week I was feeling little flutters and kicks. I'm now 25 wks and feel lots of movement everyday. Hope that reassures you abit.

I didnt feel anything until 24 weeks, even then this was the slight flutter feeling. I think its very normal and you have nothing to worry about. Good luck with your scan

MrsMattie · 04/06/2008 14:02

Can you get your midwife or GP to see you and find the heartbeat with a doppler just to reassure you? It is perfectly normal, by the way. I was approaching 20 weeks when I felt the first flutters with my first baby, too. Your placenta may well be at the front of your uterus, cushioning the kicks and wriggles, so ytou won't feel them strongly for weeks yet (this was the case with ym first pregnanycy). But do see your MW/GP if you're worried - don't suffer in silnce!

I didn't feel anything until 23 /24 weeks with my first. Don't worry. It will happen soon.

I'm not sure if that's true Knickers, because the movements are felt inside the body - from inside the uterus, rather then outside.

It's normal not to feel movements until 2à22 weeks with a first baby.

Knickers - I have heard that theory - but it makes no sense to me at all. I've felt movements with this pregnancy since 15 weeks (third baby) - earlier then ever before despite being fatter then ever before. But I'm feeling the movements internally.

It does vary hugely from woman to woman, and of course on the baby itself - some babies just don't move very much or they are in a position that makes it's harder to feel their movements.

plummed · 04/06/2008 14:53

Actually Knickers, my MW told me the same when I got paranoid about no movements at 21 weeks. I am a size 14 (pre-pregnancy, of course, no kidding myself I can still fit in those jeans!) and was most offended to be called large!

I smiled it off and finished my appointment and went home in a huff. Felt the baby bubbles about ten minutes after ranting at my DP about being called fat. So maybe a good temper tantrum will help wake the baby up a bit!

cyteen · 04/06/2008 14:54

I'm pg with my first and tbh I had no idea what I was feeling. It was only once the movements had got strong enough to be unmistakable (around 24-25 weeks) that I could look back and realise that I had felt them earlier, but just didn't realise that that's what they were.

I suspect there is a little bit of a benign culture of bullshitting about movement anyway - a kind of keeping up with the Joneses thing. Once one person says they've felt movement at x weeks, others may feel compelled to. That's certainly the impression I got from the antenatal boards I was previously on

dgomez · 04/06/2008 15:43

I am almost 25 weeks and only now start to feel some king of delicate movement a couple of times a day . I was told it also depends on where the placenta is placed, if it's anterior the placenta is like having a pillow that prevents you from feeling the baby, also during the day if you are moving, working etc is harder to feel the baby, normally you should be able to feel it when you are lying down on a sofa or in bed.

Minniethemoocher · 04/06/2008 16:19

I am a size 14-16 I don't consider myself large! Felt first baby at 18 weeks, 18 weeks tomorrow and still haven't felt this one, little bit worried, just normal pregnancy paranoia....

Yorkshiremum · 04/06/2008 17:43

I felt DS1 move at about 17 weeks but when asked at my 20 week scan with DS2 I hadn't felt him (I was surprised as everyone says how you feel subsequent babies sooner but I didn't!)

I think it can also depend where your placenta is - mine was anterior so in front of the baby and hence cushioning the movements. I wouldn't worry!

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 05/06/2008 13:46

thanks all - very reassuring to hear it's normal and I've got a good 3/4 weeks before I should really worry by which time I'll have had scan and more midwifery appointments...totally agree could be a keeping up with the jonses style scenario...hope there isn't anything in the weight thing, can still get into my size 10/12's (just about!)

hey all - thanks again for reassurance, just to say i felt my baby move yesterday at 20+5, and again today so all that worrying for nothing, thank goodness!
