Heart fluttering & shortness of breath, 11 weeks

I’m bit scared! I am 11 weeks pregnant and have ben getting intermittent heart flutters since week 9. Also this week feeling very short of breath; needing to lie down after just going up the stairs. I’m normal weight and a non-smoker. Did anyone else experience this?
I have spoken to a GP on the phone and he’s referred me for an ECG and bloods but can’t wait until then! Mind is racing. Haven’t seen the midwife yet as they’re so busy – my booking-in appointment won’t be until 13 weeks 🫠

I had this and it was high blood pressure. Wasn't seen for it until a midwife appointment but I had more than usual because of other things. Sorry forgot to say, took aspirin throughout pregnancy and now have a healthy 3 year old. Try not to let it stress you too much as that can make the palpitations worse iyswim

If your heart is racing very fast alongside feeling short of breath, I would head in to the emergency department to be seen. Particularly if you get any chest pain or dizziness also. Often if you’re having abnormal heart rhythm now and then it can be hard to capture on a one off ECG. It’s not that uncommon to have this happen in pregnancy as there is more demand on your circulation, depending what is happening sometimes it can be worth some treatment to improve symptoms, it’s usually not a sign of a major underlying problem but does mean you should have a good in person check (ie Dr to listen to your heart/lungs as well as ECG/bloods, sometimes a Holter monitor ECG that you wear for x few days, sometimes an echocardiogram also),

I've had that for a week or two this pregnancy, roughly the same weeks as you. It's gone now and would guess it's because of blood pressure/increase in blood volume, but better to mention it to a midwife than ignore it. A few years back I had this (non pregnancy related) and had a blood test, ECG and 24 hour monitoring for a day and it was all fine, but was good to check just in case.

I had this and I actually had pneumonia. But I’d think that was fairly unusual.

Good advice above which I'm not refuting, def see the doctor, but also get some gentle iron supplements like spatone too as low iron can make you feel breathless and is common in pregnancy.

Keepingbusyeating · 06/10/2025 10:27

Could be low iron, both happen to me when I’m low on iron so hopefully they do a blood test for you!

I had this, this pregnancy on and off for a few weeks.would even occur while laid down on the sofa having done absolutely nothing on the evenings.

Mine was due to lower blood pressure (although wasnt even that low for my pregnancy normal) and general pregnancy things I think.

Wasn't taking anything other than regular supplements, had no issues with iron or anything else. And like you op, normal weight, non smoker.
Stopped around 18ish weeks, now over 35 weeks and all is well.
It's great you've got an assessment booked for it, in the meanwhile try not to stress, it certainly won't help! X

Ah thanks. Yes I wondered if it might be low iron. I usually eat so well but first trimester (it’s my second pregnancy) has knocked me for six: so so nauseous. Consequently, I’ve been eating a lot of beige. Anyway, bloodwork and ECG Friday.
