NHS 2 week wait for second scan

Hi everyone, I had previously wrote a post about how I had went for an early scan which I should have been 8w 1d and the sonographer could only measure me at 5w6days

I am absolutely certain on my day of conception.

I then followed up with a scan at early pregnancy 4 days later who also stated that the baby is not growing and hadnt even grown 1mm in 4 days when it should be growing 1mm per day.

Obviously I am devastated, I am also so confused as I have to wait until the 15th for another scan. I was too numb to ask questions and I don’t want to waste nhs time by phoning back but I guess I’m just a bit confused as to what the process is & wondered if anyone has experienced similar ?

when I go in 2 weeks and the baby has continued to not grow - what happens next ? The sonographer hinted at the fact I was waiting to see if I naturally miscarried - but what if I don’t ?

im finding the whole experience very traumatic

Sorry to hear you are going through this.

The 2 week wait is standard to confirm no growth i.e a miscarriage. They cannotdiagnose it from a scan at one timepoint as it could be that the dates are wrong and the baby is just small. Obviously I know you said you were certain of dates but they must be sure themselves before diagnosing as some people are just confused and the baby grows.

In 2 weeks you'll have the next scan and if it confirms a miscarriage (i.e. a "missed miscarriage" because your body hasn't realised) you will have 3 options:

  1. Natural - wait until your body realises and you miscarry naturally. This take weeks to happen though.
  1. Medical - medication to bring on miscarriage - often this is at home and gicen supportive advice. Have heard of some people being in hosp for it. Hopefully that completely clears the womb but sometimes it can not fully clear it (incomplete miscarriage) and further medication/surgery is required.
  1. Surgery - under general anaesthetic to remove pregnancy products. Surgery very quick and home same day. Physical recovery generally very straight forward afterwards.

I went through similar and went for surgery as I couldn't face waiting and experiencing miscarrying naturally - I felt I didn't have it in me. I had a positive surgery experience. But you just need to think what suits you best and your circumstances. Tommys website has good information on it all.

Look after yourself. Very tough time xxx

*sorry just to add, the nhs won't take private scans into account so even though you have had 2 scans already 1. They aren't far enough apart 2. They weren't both by the same provider. Like I said it is so important they accurately diagnose a miscarriage compared to having dates wrong

I had to have three scans in similar circumstances I'm sorry that you are going through this too
I had the first two in the rainbow room at my hospital. The first showed I was 10 days behind but there was a heartbeat. I had a 2 week wait for the next scan which showed a little growth but not enough for a 2 week gap and there now was no heartbeat. To confirm the miscarriage and to initiate management of the miscarriage I needed another scan with a different sonographer. I had this scan at the epu which showed the same as the second scan. I had started spotting the night before so I didn't need any intervention and passed the pregnancy the day of the last scan
