33 weeks pregnant baby has hiccups all the time

I’m currently 33 weeks pregnant with what has been the most anxious pregnancy after a still birth at 37 weeks last year. I’m worried about absolutely everything! I’ve noticed that the last few days baby has had constant hiccups literally like 5/6 times a day. I went in today anyway for some reassurance monitoring and the midwife said it’s totally normal but I can’t help but think that it’s excessive. Had anybody noticed their baby having constant hiccups at this stage of pregnancy?

Oh wow, I can understand how nervy this pregnancy must be. Really sorry to hear about your loss.

No medical expertise here but just wanted to say that my first baby was like that in the womb ! He was also a very hiccupy newborn, which could be annoying but didn’t cause any health issues at all. He did have silent reflux, and the hiccupy ness may have been an early sign of that but I’m not sure. Either way, he grew out of that with no ill effects.

All the very best for the rest of your pregnancy x

I’m really sorry for what you have been through. Just wanted to share my mum said I had hiccups all the time when she was pregnant with me. I’m in my 30s now and the hiccups have never left me, I get them a lot!

Greenllama123 · 03/10/2025 19:36

So sorry for the loss of your first child. But it is normal, my first had hiccups pretty much everyday sometimes multiple times for the whole 3rd trimester and then regularly for the first 3 months of her life too. My second not nearly as much so must just be something that happens to some babies only. Good luck and hope baby arrives soon

amispeakingintongues · 03/10/2025 19:37

my son had hiccups all the time! Way more than my daughter. He was born on due date natural delivery and healthy. Your worrying is totally understandable though and i’m so incredibly sorry for you loss. Praying for a healthy and positive pregnancy and delivery for you x

Topseyt123 · 03/10/2025 19:38

I'm so sorry for what you have been through. Your anxiety is very understandable.

My DD1 was like this when I was pregnant with her. Almost constant hiccups. It didn't cause either of us any problems so I would say try not to worry, although I know that is easy to say.

YoungMacDonald · 03/10/2025 19:39

Yes, me! I remember one day around the 32 week mark my baby had hiccups 4 times in one day. Like you, I was worried and mentioned it to work colleagues (I work in the medical field) and reassurance was given than baby is practicing swallowing at this stage and right up to birth. The swallowing causes hiccups. Annoying and worrying for Mum but no problem for the baby.

My hiccupy baby is 4 years old now and still a hiccup monster!

modge · 03/10/2025 19:41

Like a PP said, my DC was very hiccupy in the womb, to the point it was outwardly visible in the final weeks, and also had silent reflux as a newborn which they grew out of by around 5 months (which felt like forever at the time!). Now aged 7 they are still prone to hiccups, especially if they eat too quickly/bounce around too much! However, it just seems like one of those things and doesn't cause any issues as such.

I'm sorry for your earlier loss and wish you all the best with the rest of your pregnancy.

BlouseyBrowne · 03/10/2025 19:41

Please don’t worry about this, it’s completely normal. Both of my babies had hiccups a lot when I was pregnant - I’ll admit I used to enjoy it.

Kaftanqween · 03/10/2025 19:42

I am so sorry for what you have been through. My now 19 yo had constant hiccups in the womb. It seemed to be related to my own digestion and bread has given me indigestion ever since. She has no issues however

PurpleTurtleMoose · 03/10/2025 19:43

I'm so sorry for your loss, and it's totally understandable you'd be super anxious after that. My baby had hiccups several times a day throughout the third trimester. I was so worried I even went to triage once 😂 She's 4 weeks old now and all healthy. Some babies are just hiccupy 🥰

Emptinest · 03/10/2025 19:44

My dd was the same. She hiccuped a lot before she was born. She's an adult now and is the hiccupiest person I know.

Pumpkinpoodles · 03/10/2025 19:47

Where are you feeling the hiccups? Are you sure that’s what they are? In your situation I’d go for a private scan. You can’t trust a midwife feeling your belly to spot a problem.

Pumpkinpoodles · 03/10/2025 19:50

Don’t want to alarm you I’m sure it’s fine but for your own benefit I’d get scanned. This is from my bad experience of giving birth at a trust that’s now being investigated. Trust your instincts 100%

SiberFox · 03/10/2025 19:58

OP I had the hiccupiest baby. I understand the anxiety, googled hiccups in pregnancy so many times as was worried something was wrong - was on high alert after recurrent miscarriage. My daughter continued hiccuping frequently between about where you are and birth at 41 weeks, every day multiple times a day. She had quite a lot of hiccups in her first year too.

If you get worried, go and get checked even if it’s every day. They will always happily check on the baby especially after your awful experience.

All the best to you and the baby x

MsCactus · 03/10/2025 20:17

My mum always talked about my two siblings having constant hiccups in the womb - they both had quite severe reflux when they were born, no other issues and they're both very healthy adults now.

By contrast I never once got hiccups in the womb and didn't have reflux when I was born - never sick as a baby.

Hiccups don't mean anything serious - but seeing another pp say their baby had constant hiccups in the womb and reflux I wonder if there's a connection!

lljkk · 03/10/2025 20:20

None of my 4 kids had reflux but baby1 had a lot of hiccups inside me.
Baby1 is now 90kg 25yo earning more than me, I think he turned out ok. :-)

panda42 · 03/10/2025 20:30

Yes my son had hiccups all the time and they would last 10-15 minutes at times. They were quite intense too but everything was fine!

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 03/10/2025 20:37

My now 18 year old DS was ridiculously hiccupy when I was pregnant with him ( I hardly slept because of it) and to this day still gets hiccups at the drop of a hat. I think some people are more prone to it than others?

CatCaretaker · 03/10/2025 20:57

Sorry for your loss OP.

DD, now 9 months, was very hiccupy in the womb. I did ask about it and, like you, was told it was perfectly normal. She was born fine and healthy and is perfect.

Oh, also, if this is any use to you, she has never self settled except when she was very small, hiccups used to put her to sleep
Anytime she had them we'd put her down in her moses and she'd drift off. It was nice while it lasted!

NC780 · 03/10/2025 21:01

My baby had this and also had reflux as a newborn. But she was healthy and she did outgrow the hiccups and reflux.

BabyDaisy · 03/10/2025 23:03

This was my experience also when pregnant with my baby. For us hiccups continued after she was born for a good few months!

stitty · 03/10/2025 23:04

Yep me also about 5-6 times a day , he still has hour hiccups sessions now at 7 months old! Perfectly healthy though x

Iamthemoom · 03/10/2025 23:08

Sorry for your loss OP, that’s so tough and of course will affect how you feel now and your levels of worry.

My dd had hiccups all the time from around 33 weeks to just before labour and then as a young child she had them a lot too. It really is very normal so try not to let it worry you.

Marmite1992 · 04/10/2025 05:51

I'm so sorry to hear about your loss, I can't imagine how tough that must have been and the effect it will be having on your anxiety for this pregnancy.
Hiccups are totally normal, my little one was hiccuping the same amount as yours, now she is 7 weeks old and we still laugh at how many times a day she gets hiccups bless her. Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy xxx
