Hey
first time mum
and wow I’m just constantly overwhelmed with what we need for baby
nursery furniture all done and up just need the mattress which I figured would be easy but after picking one and then seeing reviews I changed my mind.
can any one help Me? Baby won’t be in their cot for maybe 6months as we have the next to me I know they all have to meet the requirement but do you go for sprung or not? Also do I have to spend £100’s or will one for £50 be just as good

any help would be appreciated
baby due December 2025 ❤️

Christ, my DS1 got a basic foam one from IKEA!

I wouldn’t say a £50 mattress will be just as good as a £100 one, although sometimes you pay more because of the brand. To ensure a good fit, I’d go for the same brand as your cot where possible so your options may be limited by that? Pocket sprung is generally considered ‘better’ than sprung as they offer more flexibility and comfort.
Does your cot turn into a cot bed? If so, you’ll get years of use from the mattress and if you look after it by using a waterproof protector, it will probably be worth spending the extra.

I bought a mid range one. It’s supposed to prevent flat head, but to be honest she isn’t in it long enough to get a flat head 🫩🥱 But her cot adapts into a mini bed so we didn’t want the cheapest one hoping that it will last.
The baby shops can scare you into thinking you need the most expensive mattress or your baby will die. We were told that the neonatal unit of Barcelona used this special mattress that they were conveniently selling in the shop because it had an anti suffocation layer and it changes colour if the baby has a fever 😳 We walked out as first time parents with our heads spinning, then we spoke to another mum. She said the anti suffocation layer is going to be covered with a waterproof mattress cover so that’s null and void, and she reassured us that we would know when baby has a fever, it’s obvious. You don’t need a mattress to tell you. She was completely right and I’m glad we didn’t spend €350 on a mattress 😬

Thank you for your replies

yeah it’s such a whirlwind of what you should have
our cot does turn into a bed so it’s gonna be with her a while
I’ll go on the website we got her furniture from and see what I can find for a mattress

My first and second had sprung matress (that was second and then third hand to start with) that did them well until age 3 each when they moved from cot to toddler transition bed and then onto a full single.
That then got stored in the barn and got sprayed on by the cats so have bought a cheaper (40pounds) foam based one from ebay that fits the dimensions for our cot.
I liked that sprung had more "natural" materials in it and had more breathability for sweaty nights, but the foam one we have seems just as breathable for when they inevitably roll asleep face down as all of mine tend to.
Honestly, pay as much as you're comfortable doing, I think a lot of them you're paying for a brand and not necessarily a better mattress
