Much difference between fertility at 31 compared to 33?

Any advice/reassurance/experiences appreciated.

I would like to have a baby now or within the next year (aged 31) but due to partner's circumstances and living arrangements it looks more likely to TTC in a couple of years. Is there likely much difference in chance to conceive?
I really wanted to try soon, but doesn't look like it will happen :(

I have 'regular' periods and have just started tracking ovulation to get a better idea of my cycle.

Thanks!

If you don't have fertility issues, there is very little difference between 31 and 33. I had 3 children after the age of 33, first cycle every time.

But if you already have fertility issues, but didn't know it, then leaving it until 33 may lower your options medically and make medical interventions to conceive delayed and less likely to be successful.

I conceived my first at 31, I came off the pill in August and got my positive test mid December.
TTC number 2 started at 36 I stopped the pill in April, positive test in June miscarried in August, another positive test in October, miscarried in December. Conceived again in January now 37 and this one stuck and is now 3 weeks old.

Age didn't impact my ability to conceive. One thing would consider is not just the time to conceive but also risk of miscarriage. Between me and my two sisters we have 3 births from 8 pregnancies between the ages of 18 and 37.

Conceived at 28, 30, and 32. Took 4 months, 3 months and 4 months

I suppose everyone is different but it didn't make a difference to me. Although, I have had losses later, but who knows if this is age related. I fell pregnant with my son first try, no issues, at 30. Started trying for my second at 34. Fell pregnant 3rd try (was still breastfeeding until the 2nd try so i wonder if this halted my fertility the first 2 attempts), ended in MC. then first try trying again I concieved but had a chemical. And then first try again, concieved straight away, but another MC. I'm 35 now and still waiting to recover from this last MC before trying again, and under the referral of the recurrent MC clinic.

Thanks so much for your advice. I'm glad to hear you didn't experience too many fertility issues. I just feel sad as I wanted to have my first baby soon after 30 as I feel ready, didn't want to take my fertility for granted now.
I guess this happens though :) - I hope everything will be ok.

Unfortunately nothing can be planned with babies. I think just go for it and take the worry out. Try and go with the "if it happens, it happens".
You might take a few months or it might happen the first try. Most importantly don't make it a chore

I don't think the age will make a difference in a few years but I think if you want to TTC this year but are putting it off, pay to have some tests done so you know if that's a good idea. Too many people I know have put it off to have the perfect wedding, job, house, holiday etc. and then found it's taken years.

Also at 33 you risk falling into private IVF if there's an issue because you can only get it on NHS before 35 and having TTC for 2 years so starting at 33 will take you outside of that I think

That depends where you live surely? My sister had it on the NHS in her 40s.

Yes exactly, it’s a post code lottery.

It took me a few years to conceive at almost 27. But fell on the first cycle at 23. But I have dodgy ovaries apparently

AmberBeaker · 01/10/2025 19:41

My first took 8 cycles age 30. My 2nd was first try age 33. Currently pregnant with #3 first try at 36. Feel more fertile than ever lol as age has me firing out eggs.
One thing i would think about is it can take ages for cycle to regulate after birth control (only for some people, some are fine straight away) so you could think about coming off hormonal BC a good bit before you want to start TTC and use a different method in the interim til ready to try.
I stopped my BC 1 year before TTC so I could settle into my cycle and get to know my body better.

Oh wow, and 27 is very young too. What is the issue with your ovaries?

Thanks!
Yep I haven’t been on hormonal birth control for ages now. Have been just using natural planning and not doing ‘unprotected’ during most fertile time e.g the likely ovulation time. But I know withdrawal isn’t always the best BC …. So there’s still a chance.
just starting tracking properly though with OPKs and measuring BBT so hopefully gives me much more insight :)
