Hi,
I am hoping someone can share their experiences, if they have experienced something similar to me?
I have been diagnosed with hyperemesis gravidarum since 5 weeks of pregnancy, I am 12 weeks this Friday.

I am on the medication Xonvea, which has seemed to take the edge off, but hasn’t completely alleviated my symptoms. I’ve woken up this morning and for the first time, I don’t feel nauseous at all.

although this should be a good thing, I’m worried about baby. I have had countless people/ healthcare professionals tell me that at least if I’m sick, I know I’m still pregnant. Am I being too cautious if I call to get checked? Or do I wait for my 12 week scan that’s on 3rd October?

Thank you in advance,
a worried first time mum x

My sickness stopped abruptly at 12 weeks. However if you are worried, contact your midwife.

Congratulations on your pregnancy. 💐

I had HG from week 12-16, it stopped very suddenly, all was well. It does commonly stop around week 12, and it can stop quite suddenly.

But, I totally understand why you’re worried, it is very natural to watch symptoms like that, especially when as you say, everyone assures you that being sick means things are ok. You can always call your midwife.

Could have been first trimester sickness. I was told morning sickness didn't mean 'in the morning' but in the morning of the pregnancy i.e. the first trimester.

But please get it checked out at an Early Pregnancy Unit. I bled in my first trimester and having had miscarriages was beside myself. The EPU reassured me all was well. Well worth it for peace of mind.

I wouldn’t stress too much, I didn’t have sickness as bad as HG but I did feel very sick, and after the first trimester the symptoms varied day to day, sometimes I felt horrendous and sometimes I felt fine! If it’s any comfort you’ll probably be back to feeling nauseous soon enough 😅

Countless people/ healthcare professionals tell me that at least if I’m sick, I know I’m still pregnant

I think this is people’s slightly clumsy way of trying to make you feel better tbh, I wouldn’t take it as gospel.

Agree with a PP, the comments about sickness being a good sign are a clumsy attempt to make mums feels slightly better, but the flip side is if and when it subsides it causes panic like this!

Morning sickness often decreases significantly around 11-13 weeks, which is when the initial surge of pregnancy hormones balances out and the placenta takes over the role of nutrition and sustaining the fetus, which puts less strain on your body and contributes to a reduction in symptoms.

You could absolutely wait until your scan next week, but if it's going to cause you significant stress (which isn't unreasonable!) then contact your midwife/EPU and see if they can offer a reassurance scan, or bring your dating scan forward at all

I wouldn't worry too much about what it means as you are on medication and also out of the worst time. However, no harm asking for an early scan.
I've often seen posts from people who still had awful sickness after it had been confirmed that the baby had no heartbeat, and it continued until the miscarriage was completed. I don't think sickness should be considered reassuring, nor does it's absence have any clear meaning.

The "if you're feeling sick you're still pregnant" thing is a false reassurance to try and make you feel better about the sickness.
In this case it sounds like it's backfired.
For what it's worth with my loss (had HG with each pregnancy) my sickness didn't stop until I passed the pregnancy despite a scan showing no heartbeat. It was like a switch when it passed the same as when you give birth and the sickness immediately stopped but was awful until that moment.

I had hyperemesis with my first three pregnancies. Two were miscarriages and the sickness continued for a few days to a week after I passed the pregnancies. The body can be cruel!

@Laurjadeb I started having odd days with less/no nausea with my daughter when I was starting to come out of the sickness. I had hyperemesis from 5 to 15 weeks then 26-36 weeks with intermittent sickness in the middle.
