Suspected vanishing twin - any hope?

Hi all, had my first ultrasound today at exactly 7 weeks - I was tracking ovulation so fairly certain of my dates. I was shocked when the sonographer told me I was carrying twins. One is measuring 6w6d, the other 6w3d. There was a heartbeat for the larger twin, but none found for the smaller one.

The sonographer said there's a chance the smaller one could develop more. If anyone has experienced this - is there actually any hope of the smaller twin developing or should I prepare myself for the next ultrasound?

It was transvaginal so I'm tending to think there's not much hope. Just very nervous now as I'm reading vanishing twins can have a negative impact on the remaining twin.

The first time I was scanned DT1 had a heartbeat but DT2 did not. I cannot remember exactly when it was, though -- but before 6w. DT2 is now 16 years old. A friend of mine miscarried a twin at 10 weeks and carried the other babe to term. Hang in there. I know it's hard but there's nothing you can do to control this outcome, you just need to wait it out. It's unbelievably difficult to go through. Sending a hand hold.

At my 12 week scan with my first, they saw evidence there may have been a twin. They said perhaps if I’d had a scan at your stage there may have been two viable babies. I always thought it would have been quite upsetting had I found out then, especially as I’d had an intuition about twins early on but had talked myself out of it. But finding out at that stage I was just happy to have my healthy baby. Nothing was said that she could be in any danger and she is absolutely fine aged 9!

My understanding is that it’s not unusual for heartbeats to be hard to find at 6 weeks - I hope it works out for both babies.

Thanks so much for sharing your experience, I'm kind of kicking myself for getting a scan so early!

I had this with dd1. At an 8 or 9 week scan - by the 18 week one the twin had gone.

shes 26 now and absolutely fine.
