What does baby’s first movements feel like?

Everyone tell me it’s like little bubbles and I could swear that I’ve been feeling tiny sensations like bubbles but I’m not sure if it’s in my head or it’s just gas . It’s my first baby, I’m 17 weeks and I’m quite small and short (idk if that makes a difference in how early you feel movements)…. Anyway I guess what I’m asking is when it’s a big movement I guess I will definitely know about it?

Tbh you’ll never know if the early ones are movements or just digestion. I mean I’m not pregnant now and sometimes I get movements that feel very much like a baby kick! Just relax at some point you’ll know what you’re feeling is a kick

Pennyroses · 21/09/2025 14:53

Movement feels slightly different to gas in my opinion, it's more like a squirming sensation. And it's more deliberate than gas if that makes sense, gas is light and like bubbles, movement is a lot more distinct. You'll definitely know it when you feel it for sure but it is subtle in the early weeks. I'm pregnant with my 4th so I already know what to look out for and I'm feeling it at 15 weeks although it's very sporadic still

Mine felt like butterflies. He's 14 now and the memory still makes me smile.

DappledThings · 21/09/2025 15:11

I found it was like when you get a twitchy muscle. That kind of tiny feeling of something ticking.

TimeForATerf · 21/09/2025 15:16

Yes to butterfly tickles or muscle twitching. At 17 weeks this is most definitely baby, I first felt it at 14 weeks. They get stronger and bigger until you can lie down and watch your baby flipping around which is wonderful.

WildCherryBlossom · 21/09/2025 15:19

Yes, little flutterings like butterflies at first. Around 17 weeks sounds about right too. It’s adorable when you first become aware of those delicate little movements. Give it a few weeks and an elbow or knee jabbed into your bladder will send you into a flying panic looking for the nearest loo 😅

TheBirdintheCave · 21/09/2025 15:37

For me, the first movement felt like a goldfish turning in a bag of water.

WrittenThatWay · 21/09/2025 16:06

It felt like muscle twitches for me too to start with! Have you noticed times of the day you feel it more? For me I felt it most when I was lying in bed at night, probably around 17/18 ish weeks too, and then gradually it got stronger and stronger and I could feel him moving during the day as well. By sort of 24 ish weeks there’ll be no doubt any more! Haha

figgyandpig · 21/09/2025 19:43

Felt like fluttering for me. I actually felt movement super early around 11/12 weeks with my second. You’ll know it’s movement the more you feel it.

limetrees32 · 21/09/2025 19:54

I know this sounds strange but surely I can't be the only one - I never felt any kicks or movement
In the last couple of weeks when in bed I did feel an all encompassing heavy drag as though the baby was trying to turn completely around
It was a back to back labour and his was going backwards and getting stuck.
Someone tell me I'm not the only one not to n feel movement

People say bubbles to be polite. IME what it actually felt like early on was that feeling when you suppress a fart and it bubbles back up inside!

PraisebetoGod · 21/09/2025 19:59

Flutters
Bubbles
Gas

Me too! (Or like an internal washing machine!)

TammyJones · 21/09/2025 20:18

I was in the bath, so very relaxed and felt fluttering Grin

Kaybee1989 · 21/09/2025 20:42

I’ve only been pregnant once and I’m fairly petite. 5’2” and I didn’t feel anything for sure until 19/20 weeks. I don’t think I felt flutters or bubbles etc I had a poke. It was like someone had poked me but from the inside outwards. It stopped me in my tracks and there was no doubt that it was baby. Maybe what you are feeling IS the baby but when you know for sure… wow! What a magical feeling 🥰 For me, apart from the end result obviously, it was the best part of the pregnancy! I didn’t get kicked in the ribs or the bladder just nudges in the sides 💕

This is extremely abnormal. Was your child healthy?

autumngirl714 · 21/09/2025 21:01

Stick your tongue in the inside of your cheek and move it around.
that’s the best way to describe baby movements (but obvs the feeling is in your tummy!).

mothercanigo · 21/09/2025 21:28

It didn’t really feel like anything else I’ve experienced so it’s hard to compare but the closest is flutters. I didn’t really realise that what I was feeling was movement until the second pregnancy. But 17 wks is exactly when I felt it with my first pregnancy.

limetrees32 · 21/09/2025 21:48

@Thinandbare yes, he was and is healthy .
Long time ago now and I'd be tempted to think of imagination.
But at the time I kept hoping I'd feel something. I recall it well.
I must have not recognised the movements

greengagesummers · 21/09/2025 21:55

For me it felt exactly as if popcorn was popping right down low inside at the bottom of the bump!

This..

This is what i felt at the early stages.

Now im 32 weeks and it feels like babys got a baseball bat and is currently using my bladder as a piñata.

The kicks get very strong as the weeks go on. You wont feel routine movement until around 26 weeks, which is when your meant to count the kicks.

Its still early to be feeling big kicks unless you're carrying twins.

It doesnt matter whether your big or small framed.
It all depends on where baby is laid, if your back to back with your baby you might not feel them very strong as they are cushioned, but if theyre more up front you may feel them a little more.

Dont worry too much about kicks for the minute. You'll have a couple of scans before you start feeling kicks properly.

I found that baby was kicking on the 20 week scan but i couldnt feel it😅
