Baby hiccups A LOT in third trimester. Concern?

I'm nearly 34 weeks and since about 30 weeks the baby hiccups a lot. I'm talking about 10 episodes a day, lasting 5-10 minutes at a time. Seems to happen after I eat.

I asked the midwife last week at appointment is it normal. She replied "It can be". Didn't reassure me much to be honest, but who else can I ask? I have two other children and it never happened like this with them.

I'm a bit worried.

Same here, currently 34 weeks.
Phoned triage on weekend after stupidly checking google and was told it's normal xx

Have you been drinking a lot of fizzy pop?

KelsCommemorativeSausage · 17/09/2025 13:51

My daughter hiccuped a lot, after I ate and when I got into the bath. Absolutely nothing wrong with her at all but she still gets hiccups all the time.

MyIvyGrows · 17/09/2025 13:52

Mine used to hiccup every day in utero. He has turned into a very hiccuppy child! But nothing serious.

Shufflebumnessie · 17/09/2025 13:54

Both of mine were ridiculously hiccupy all through my pregnancy. The most I recorded was 35 hiccuping sessions in one day by DS!
They both hiccuped regularly once born too but soon grew out of it.

If you don’t feel confident with what your midwife says then never feel bad getting a second opinion from triage.

I, a stranger on mumsnet will say it was normal for my baby. But definitely ask triage to give you a check over if you are EVER worried. Don’t ever feel bad checking on baby. It’s so important not to feel embarrassed to ask.

FunnysInLaJardin · 17/09/2025 14:05

DS1 was a very hiccupy baby when I was pregnant.

He is now nearly 20 and still gets hiccups regularly.

twobabiesandapup · 17/09/2025 14:10

My second was exactly like this when I was pregnant, and now that she’s 11 weeks old she’s exactly the same on the outside as well! She has her evening hiccupping every day without fail, but on the positive side it really makes her laugh when she does it 🤷🏻‍♀️

ecossegirl91 · 17/09/2025 14:13

My 2 boys were very hicuppy in the womb and were/is a very hiccuppy baby. Both had/have reflux too which can be a reason for the hicupping but not always!

PurpleTurtleMoose · 17/09/2025 16:08

I had this too and it really concerned me (Google was not my friend). I even went to triage once but they didn't really listen and kept assuming I was there for reduced movement. My baby was born 2 weeks ago, and still hiccups a lot but is perfectly healthy.

One potential thing to be prepared for, a midwife told me that excessive hiccups can sometimes (Not always) mean the baby has a tongue tie. That did turn out to be the case with mine, but it's really not a big deal and was easily fixed. I definitely wouldn't worry, it's just something to look out for xx

CucumberCool · 17/09/2025 16:10

I found it really comforting, feeling her in there hiccuping away. She still gets them quite a lot at three years old. It's completely normal

Sometimes women get cravings during pregnancy. It's pretty common. Fizzy drinks might be one?

Why would it cause the baby to have hiccups?

What do you think the umbilical cord is there for?

Food and drink don't go down the umbilical cord haha, only blood does.

To answer the op, my two had this especially my dd. She'd wait until I was lying down in bed then hiccup for literally half an hour at a time, I basically never got a wink of sleep.

She's perfectly healthy but still never seems to let us get a full night's sleep even years on.

Marmite1992 · 17/09/2025 19:39

Don't worry totally normal, my baby had SO MANY episodes of hiccups, my stomach would move with them. Now she's born she still hiccups just as much 😂

DramaAlpaca · 17/09/2025 19:42

My first baby was very hiccuppy in utero but the other two weren't. It's a weird sensation but I quite liked feeling, tbh. It's very normal, just what some babies do.

Bumbers · 17/09/2025 20:37

mine both hiccuped a lot. Now 3 and 5 and very healthy and robust!

flowertea · 18/09/2025 13:55

Thanks everyone, I do feel more reassured that so many others have also had this. I am going to call the community midwives phone number and ask as well.
