Is this still a planned c section

Long story short, baby was breech, all prepped for surgery then found out baby as head down…. Myself and husband became so indecisive and said ok no need for c section. So went home.

fast forward few days later we decided c section. The ob said come in tomorrow 8am if space opens up then baby will be born… but be prepared it might get to 4pm and then send me home. To come back again the next day.

so basically is it still a planned c section for me its not an emergency one right ? Thanks

also past trauma with inductions 3rd degree tear and huge blood loss with our first little
girl I birthed at 10 pounds 5oz. But never mind that.

i read some horror stories about c section recovery but some good ones to. Any positive stories to be shared will calm my nerves thanks !!

You have plans to go in and get prepped if there is space, ofcourse it's still a planned c sec.
They aren't rushing you in and creating an emergency space for you.
Good luck, and enjoy your new bundle (assuming you get a spot tomorrow)
I've never had one, but I've heard more positive than negative when it comes to planned sections if that helps ease the fears x

It sounds as though you're on the planned list but you might get bumped for emergencies, which is ever the case for ELCS. I had two, both were fab (I lost quite a bit of blood on my first, but they knew it would happen and therefore were very prepared. Just meant I was very tired post-birth for a number of months). You don't feel the spinal, very relaxed theatre and all in all, a lovely experience. Take recovery seriously - your DH will need to step up with childcare for your eldest and all housework for a while and keep on top of your ibuprofen and paracetamol every few hours for the first week, but you should be able to walk around pretty well and feed.

Sounds like a cat 4 section (elective) unless you go into labour before it happens (it would also have been cat 4 if the baby had been breech and it was being done pre-labour). If you go into labour before the planned section then depending on whether you want to proceed with labour/ have a section it'll become a cat 2/3 (unless there are serious concerns re you/your baby and then it'll be cat 2/1).

@Mummy2025xx are you sure you want a section? You've created multiple threads saying how worried you are about one and begging for positive experiences, and now it's elective because your baby is cephalic you obviously have options.

Just a thought!

@Greybeardy hi, I am confused because obviously on Monday we were prepped ready for our planned c section, but changed our minds because baby was head down after being breach.

anyway roll on to today and I tell the OB (who was going do
my planned section Monday, that we had a hard think and that’s what we want) she said ok but I am not on a planned list anymore so Basically she says fast come in at 8am tomorrow and hopefully they’ll be able to take me…. But depending on emergencies etc so I could be waiting all day until 4pm and then they say go home and come back tomorrow and repeat the process.

When I was leaving cause everything fine with me and baby etc I asked midwife this is a planned c section, and she say was like no it’s unplanned for me? And I said but it’s not an emergency section tho, and she said well no not an emergency but your unplanned 🙈

basically what does that mean? Am I not allowed my husband there? A spinal
then skin to skin contact? Would
they force a general anaesthetic even though I am not an emergency.
Is my husband not allowed to cut the cord? Are they going just rush me as if I am an emergency case? There is no emergency for me, baby is good I am good, other than tomorrow is my
due date and I birth large babies 10 pound 5oz and had 3rd degree tear last time and huge blood loss.

anyway will I not be allowed to have music anymore? I am confused by the midwife.

It’s a planned section for medical reasons.

advice on recovery -

take all pain killers offered and demand more or stronger if needed

get surgical strength arnica tablets to help recovery from bruising

sod the housework - other people can do it

accept all offers of help and do t try and overdo it

Greybeardy · 17/09/2025 12:32

It’s an elective (cat 4) or possibly cat 3 section in a department that has tight elective capacity so fits things in around their emergency cases. There isn’t usually much difference between the anaesthetic for elective and emergency sections unless it’s a real hurry. The most common anaesthetic will be a spinal but that decision is based on your health and the urgency - if they were planning a spinal when the baby was breech then they’ll probably be planning the same now. Different hospitals have different feelings about when a birth partner joins the patient I theatre - often it’s from the very start, occasionally it’s after the spinal is sited. Parters are not usually in theatre if a GA is needed. Skin to skin is usually possible even in emergency sections so long as both baby and mother are ok.

What dues it matter if it’s classed as planned or not? Yes you will be able to do everything a planned section would allow. The only reason you wouldn’t is if there was something they needed to deal with the baby; I had a medically advised section with my first. Date was set but my waters broke ten days before. I went in but I wasn’t in active labour so was told they’d fit me in when they could. I had my baby next day. Was it planned? Yes. Did I have it on the day I was supposed to? No.
