i've always waited til after as boobs only got bigger when milk came in, tho not always practical.
maybe get a couple from mothercare/m&s to see you through the first few days, then get measured?
recommend figleaves.com once you know your size.
esp emma jane ones, plain, simple, not too pricey.
royce also good.
bravado also good but 'big' bras so hot for summer.

blooming marvellous sell some and if you are really lucky there might be some in the sale. for my second child i bought mine from there i think they were royce. they fitted me from about 32 weeks and i was still wearing them when i stopped feeding at 18months (i didnt intend to feed for that long, she refused the bottle so i had no choice, but my first child refused to breastfeed and i gave up expressing at 6m with him). i am have got them out again as i am pregnant and they still fit me.

buy a couple before you have baby as its such a fiddle anyway when you start feeding, especially when family keep popping around. i bought mine with a bit of room (but my boobs were huge by then anyway, i went from a c to an e) you will probably need room for a breast pad in there as well. also think about breatfeeding tops or a couple of tops you can layer to make a breastfeeding top. nothing is more embarassing than FIL coming around and you boob or belly is hanging out. or trying to feed in mothercare when there are loads of mums changing nappies you just feel so exposed. i have often had friends come and talk to me at toddler group when i was feeding and they didnt even realise i was feeding as i had a breast feeding top on. i even fed baby at the norfolk show when i couldnt find the breastfeeding room i sat on a bench with a couple of old farmers sitting on the bench next to me and thousands of people walking past me who didnt notice. i have had friends who just flop it out leaving nothing to the imagination and it works well at clearing the room. i am not that confident.
also when you are next out in town take note of where the feeding rooms are. then when you are out for the first few times you know where you can go quickly. most shopping centers have them as well as boots, john lewis and mothercare.

well it was ok for me to buy them before my milk came in. i like to be super prepared so i couldnt wait until afterwards. you could go and have a look and buy a couple if you want. some people say they get alot bigger boobs after the birth but i didnt.
they have some in the sale at the moment.
i have about eight of these

When I was pregnant I went from a 34DD to a 38F, then when I had the baby and my milk came in I had to go out and get new bras as I was.......34K, no joke!
I was still breastfeeding when I fell pregnant with a little surprise baby, I stopped bfing 3 months ago but my boobs have not shrunk or grown, I'm just praying they dont get any bigger when I have this baby in August as Bravissimo only go up to a K cup
So you may need to get measured again after your milk comes in if, like me, your boobs go a bit crazy

lackaDAISYcal · 02/06/2008 16:32

If possibel wait until afterwards as your boobs really take off when your milk comes in. As a stopgap get a sleep type feeding bra that is soft and allows for a bit of growth to tide you over. Bravado ones are good for this.

As for where to go; I'd make sure I went to a shop with a good measuring service, like Debenhams, House of Fraser or Bravissimo, or contact the NCT who have a local bra adivsor who will come to your house.

IME M&S and Mothercare bras are useless and just aren't supportive enough (at least for anything bigger than a D cup!). They also tend to be all cotton and stretch very quickly, losing what shape and support you had.

Good makes are Royce, Anita and Freya as well as the NCT branded ones.

JFly · 02/06/2008 16:36

Amen, sherbet. I bought a few bras (Anita - v v good) at about 36 weeks. They were 34G, bought with room in the cup, etc. Once my milk came in, I couldn't get the bras on. Six days after birth I went to Rigby )and was fitted into a 34J bra. So, be prepared for huge boobs, as it can happen.

Now, ten weeks later, I'm comfortably into the 34G, but still wear the other bras, too, just on a tighter back hook.

mel2005 · 02/06/2008 19:02

wow!!, it looks like i was lucky with the boobs after birth both times.
i havent seen the bravado ones before, i like the look of this one

www.bravadodesigns.com/category.asp?ID=34

i did have a couple of mothercare ones as well and they were not good at fitting bras and i never wear them as i found them uncomfortable.

sherbetdipdab · 02/06/2008 20:27

JFly at you going to Rigby thank god I'm not the only one who's boobs decided to have a party after the birth, I still look down at them and think "What the hell happened?!"

finallypregnant · 02/06/2008 20:37

I have bought one at my normal size from ebay (only cost a few quid). Will wait and see what happens with milk and buy again then

sweetkitty · 02/06/2008 20:41

I've bought two from figleaves (am 35 weeks with 3rd baby) I'm normally a 34B/C and have bought one in a 34D and one a sleep bra that only comes in a 34 back. I'm currently wearing a 36D but expect my back will shrink back afte the baby is here.

Will wait a few weeks and get some nice hotmilk ones once my boobs settle down.

I loathed the mothercare/M&S ones from the last twice.
