reflexology - does it work

I'm 40+4 - expected to go late cause all the women in my fam had 10 monthers (when they were still allowed to), but am very bored and would really like to meet dd or ds asap. Also, I've got two weddings coming up that I'd really like to go to, not that they are my first priority.

Anyhow, any thoughts/experience on using reflexology to get things going? Just reading about it, sounds quite relaxing, but does it work? Don't want to shell out £40 for something that's basically useless. Btw, already tried sex, pineapple, hot curry, ball bouncing - all fun, but no use so far...

I don't think reflexology works, but if yo uthink it might make you fell more relaxed and have the cash, then by all means go. i don't think anything reliably works to bring on labour tbh, except the heavy duty hospital stuff, lol!

i had it through pg with ds for my back and it worked for me with that. Also the day of the night i went into labour i asked for an appointment to get things going (38 weeks) and i went into labour a few hours later. There are certain points that they can work on to stimulate labour. I shall be using it at end of this pg too. IMO id say yes go for it

I haven't tried reflexology for this, but my sister and I both had a course of exercise(fast walking outside) and lots of papaya-fruit(I swear this works!) late pregnancy and both went to labour three days before due date. I was told that pregnancies are longer today as we women are more inactive at the later stage of pregnancy, my granmother working in the fields of a big farm had six children and none of them was 'overcooked'.

Well, I've been doing yoga, walking, exercise DVDs and the like more or less every day for the past few months, so I'm not sure it's down to being inactive! Plus my granny - she of the 10 month babies - had EIGHT kids and spent most of her time cleaning, so I think it's just one of those things... Interesting about the papaya though - I'll see if I can find some.

Wish it would stop raining though, so I could go for a proper walk without getting soaked!

it worked for me, was relaxing through pregnancy, but helped bring on labour when my DD was born. I've recommended to my sis in law as she's overdue, and if nothing happens may possibly be induced tonight

REflexology works well once the person is correctly qualified to deal with pregnancy....there is a fabulous reflexologist in Belsize Park- not sure what the rules are about naming people online so reply and i will send you her details -I've seen her a few times and truly believe it works...plus it's sooo relaxing!

thebluenoser · 03/06/2008 16:05

Well, I'll give it a go and let you know the results! I live near Sevenoaks and have a pregnancy specialist here - though thanks for the offer LaLaB!

If you want something better suited to bring on labour you should try and find a Bowen Practitioner instead of Reflexology. My cousin does both and is booked in ready for a bowen soon!

castor oil?

thebluenoser · 05/06/2008 15:22

Well, I had a session yesterday and I'm pretty sure it kick-started things! I felt a tightness in my belly almost as soon as the sessin had finished and I woke up several times in the night feeling crampy. I've been getting fairly regular cramps today - about every fifteen minutes at the mo, though they're not unbearable so I'm going to wait before calling the midwife. So, fingers crossed!!!

Even if it wasn't the reflexology that got it going (or if it's a false alarm), it was bloody relaxing - I loved it!
