I went to the GP in today with red swelling in my buttocks, while not excruciating I’m struggling to stand and sit properly and it is sore. GP said it’s a boil and I need antibiotics and to take warm salt baths, as I’m allergic to penicillin he said he prescribed his ‘3rd choice of drug’ which is metronidazole. He said baby would be fine.

I’m just a bit concerned as the leaflet inside the tablets says to not be used in pregnancy unless deemed necessary by a doctor, and some forums online suggest it causes complications at this stage. I really need the swelling to go down so I can sit and stand comfortably and drive to work. I guess I’m just a bit cautious as I’ve had a previous MC and had a recent private scan which showed baby as measuring 11+2 with a lovely heartbeat and my dating scan isn’t until I’m nearly 14 weeks.

Has anyone been prescribed this antibiotic in the first trimester and baby has been ok?

Hi,
I had a perforated bowel in November last year and had a CT scan with contrast dye and IV antibiotics due to borderline sepsis.

Not knowing I was about 4 weeks pregnant at the time! However it transpires the hospital knew…. But that’s another story.
I too am allergic to penicillin, when I was discharged I took a test and seeing it was positive I freaked, but I was given metronidazole and another antibiotic which I can’t remember the name of now.

when I told me gp he told me to stop the other one but carry on with the metronozadole, however he did state “this is a case of getting you well is the priority, it’s a tricky situation”

I did miscarry at 6+6. However I genuinely believe that was due to my infection marker levels that were sky high, the ct dye and the iv antibiotics. I don’t think the poor little bean stood a chance.

being near the end of your first trimester, I’d possibly research more and get a second opinion/confirmation? Have you checked the BUMPS website?

it’s always scary taking something when you don’t know the full risks, but need to get that boil sorted.

I wish you the best and hope you find a resolution x
