How many weeks for viability scan?

I’m currently 5w3d and definitely want to book an early scan to check for viability.

I just don’t know when is the right time?

I want to avoid going too early and being left in limbo about whether something is up or it’s just too early to for example see heartbeat. I’ve seen a few threads on here of women going to early scans and getting inconclusive results that just left the poster feeling very anxious and unsure, and having to go back again.

Obviously I’m keen to go ASAP but thinking I should leave it til longer than 6 weeks to maximise chances of clear results. What would others recommend?

I'd recommend 7-8 weeks. You should see a nice little bean blob with a lovely heartbeat.

Readingiscool92 · 08/09/2025 16:08

at 8 weeks you should see a nice clear hb! 7 weeks can sometimes be too early x

Orangewillow · 08/09/2025 17:06

7 or 8 weeks to be safe, I've had scans in 2 pregnancies at 6+1 or 2 and been able to see the heartbeat but one was IVF so we knew the dates were definitely correct and the other we got lucky!

Thanks everyone! I’m going to book one for just under 8 weeks - 7w6d - as the times work for us. Fingers crossed!

I’ve been thinking the same and think I’m around 5w3d too. This is my second pregnancy and first time I went for an early scan at 7+6 so will likely wait until then too x

Good luck with your early scan @Lookingtogrowthefamily - sounds like we’re date twins!

When the NHS offered me early reassurance scans it was at 8 weeks. They wouldn’t do earlier.

Thank you! Haven’t booked anything yet as I hate the waiting lol but will look next week to see what slots are available.

I haven’t actually had a period since conceiving my first (July 2023 🫣), but I’m pretty sure when I ovulated and why I think I’m the dates that I am.

How are you feeling? X

Thanks - good to know. 8 weeks or close to sounds like it’s definitely the right way to go!

Ah oh tricky if you haven’t had a period yet! But at least if you know when you ovulated you should be close on the dates.

I’m doing ok, thanks - just feeling anxious! It’s my first pregnancy so everything is new and I’m struggling not to worry to be honest. I have a few symptoms but quite on and off - sore boobs, some v mild cramps and a few feelings of nausea the last couple of days. How are you doing so far?

I always went at 8 weeks because if heartbeat is detected the chances of survival are 98 per cent and that was enough to make me feel comfortable in telling people if I needed to. I hated hiding my pregnancy, it's one of the things I find difficult about the first trimester. Plus it just feels more conclusive, at 6 weeks chances of pregnancy continuing are 78 per cent.

The worrying is hard isn’t it. I know it’s completely out of my control and I can’t do anything but you just want everything to be ok so badly don’t you.

I’m the same, on and off with the nausea. I have waves of it in the evening but not every day so makes me panic but again nothing I can do to control it, just trying to distract myself for the time being but I feel like it’s consuming me at night, it’s all I think about 🙈

How are you doing @Lookingtogrowthefamily?

Yes 100% I’m the same with my symptoms. My boobs aren’t as sore today so now I’m worrying about that. The last two days I’ve felt really bloated and my stomach has been really uncomfortable so that’s a new symptom. Still no really nausea at the moment, just occasional waves of feeling a bit off. It’s very stressful waiting and not knowing if everything’s ok. Hope you’re doing alright xx

Hey! Pretty much the same, sometimes feeling a bit sick but not sure if it’s hunger 🙈. My lower back is a little achy but wouldn’t be sure if it’s anything new or just something I’ve always had. I’m not one to wish time away at all but can’t wait for these next two weeks to hurry up.
My husband works shifts so haven’t booked anything yet as we haven’t been able to find a time we can both make it. I’m refreshing the page every day waiting to see if a slot becomes available 🙈. Thank you for asking 🫶🏻

How are you doing? Xx

It's 12 weeks for true viability. That's why they do the first scan around then because any scan before that does not determine viability.
