What level of sickness is normal?

My first pregnancy (9 weeks) and I know there’s not a one size fits all approach, but I’m wondering at what stage I should ask the GP for anti sickness meds.

I’m usually sick about once a day, but feel nauseous most of the time. I can keep most food/drink down except the one time a day I’m sick. Brushing my teeth makes me gag and occasionally throw up.

Is this a normal level of sickness expected during pregnancy? What was your sickness like and what was your experience of seeing a GP for it?

Sounds pretty normal to me.
I was like that, didn't take any medication.
Hopefully in a few more weeks it will settle anyway. Congratulations on your pregnancy!

Does sound normal, people say it should subside by 12-14 weeks. TBH my experience with the GP was that if I wasn’t becoming dehydrated or malnourished they weren’t interested. Annoying as I was sick every day for the whole pregnancy. I’ve since been told that is bad info from the GP, you could use this for support https://pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk

Thank you! I had a feeling the GP might be resistant unless not keeping down food/water. I’ll check our that link, thank you

It’s slightly wise than I was but I would say say in the realms of normal. Doesn’t mean you have to put up with it though. No shame in taking some meds

I was sick 3/4 times every day for the full 9 months, and felt nauseous like you. I was never dehydrated and still gained weight though, so it wasn't considered a "problem".

Thank you - if it gets any worse, I’ll make an appointment with the gp

Oh my, that sounds awful! Glad you weren’t dehydrated and managed to gain weight, but I don’t envy you being sick for the whole pregnancy!

Yes actually get used to it. You excuse yourself to go and throw up, in the same way as when you need the loo 🤣

Bloody rubbish but totally normal. I was sick maybe 1-2 times a day then nauseous for the rest of the day till about 6 months with my first.
Not a hint of pukey with my second

Pennyroses · 02/09/2025 16:58

I'm sick 1-2 times a day and I'm taking medication. I felt absolutely horrendous between week 5 - 12 and couldn't function at all, the nausea was so intense. I'm taking xonvea, I'm not sure it's helping much but it at least helps me feel like I'm doing something. I take it an hour before I get out of bed and I've noticed on the days I don't take it in time I'm always sick so I think it does help a bit x

Howdoyouwait · 02/09/2025 18:51

They’ve recently changed the rules where I am so midwives can prescribe anti sickness meds as they’re considered so safe and prefer you not to suffer. It might be normal, but it’s not necessary.

I’ve been on them since 5 weeks (8 now) and still throw up sometimes but it’s much more manageable.

EmberR · 02/09/2025 19:21

@Pennyroses can I please ask what dosage of xonvea you’re taking? I heard taking the full 4 tablets a day helps a lot

Superscientist · 02/09/2025 19:37

I'd say that's on the edge of normal but potentially would benefit from antiemetics depending on how debilitating the nausea is. It wouldn't hurt to speak to a GP for guidance

In one of my pregnancies I only had nausea if I didn't exert myself, if I exerted myself I was sick. I was sick 5 times between arriving at the GP surgery and leaving but once I got home and stayed in the sofa for the rest of the day I wasn't sick again. I was out on two antiemetics (history of hyperemesis) as it wasn't particularly practical to spend the entire day trying not to move at all.

Pennyroses · 03/09/2025 15:33

@EmberR I'm taking 3 a day, 2 in the morning and one at night. I did try 4 a day but it made absolutely no difference so I went back to 3 purely so I wasn't getting through so many tablets quickly
