Why can't you go in a hot tub if you're pregnant?

I'm going on holiday next week and there's a hot tub, but I seem to remember that you can't go in them if you're pregnant. I am 13 weeks. Does anyone know why? Is it temperature or bacteria related...or maybe I might just scare everyone off in my swimsuit???

it raises your (already higher) body temperature and can harm the baby.

Shouldn't have really hot baths either which was a bugger for me as I'm made of asbestos.

I've always found funny that here in the UK saunas(which here are never even warm, let alone hot!) are banned from pregnant women. Where sauna was invented in Finland us pregnant women have hundreds of years enjoyed it, doctors often recommend it for relaxation during pregnancy (as long as you remember to drink enough as not to get dehydrated). Actually, a generation ago all babies where born in saunas. I just came from a short vacation and totally enjoyd the hot tub!

Of course you can, can't imagine whyever not tbh.

The jets on certain pressure points can trigger labour.

It raises your body temperature and that of the baby, you obviously have something that then brings his back down, so you dont over heat, however i think the baby does not have this, and so it could be dangerous.

theyoungvisiter · 31/05/2008 21:14

I think it's because the combination of the heat and the depth of the water can raise your body temperature dangerously - you are not supposed to have very hot baths for the same reason, but hot tubs are worse than a hot bath because you are usually pretty much totally submerged, bar your arms and shoulders.

Whereas in a hot bath usually your bump and limbs are above the water line and help cool your body.

It's to do with the potential for all that hot water in the hot tub to retain bugs, it can't be chlorinated like a swiming pool. The bugs can go up you fanjo with the water and cause nasty problems for you and baby.

It's not only that - you are more likely to experience peaks in blood pressure when you are in a hot tub, go dizzy and faint. Drowning is definitely not a great help to pregnancy.

ChocOrange05 · 01/06/2008 11:27

My MW told me it was fine to have hot baths, just to be careful. The reason they advise against it is that in pregnancy your blood pressure changes and hot baths can make you feel dizzy and faint but unless you are getting that its fine. I assume the same goes with the hot tub?

Don't take my word for it, ask your MW at your next appointment
