Pethadine

Watch out if asking for pethadine in labour. I was given too much and could not breath or even tell midwife I could not breath. Passed out, then woke to find I had not died ! Awful experience. Found out later my blood levels were too low for the amount of pethadine administered by mistake!!

I was given it in my first Labour. Did fuck all. Absolutely wasted my time. It’s clearly very variable.

Oh my gosh, how terrifying.
I had it in my first labour and it sent me loopy. I started going on about Jordan Pickford and I don't even like football! Completely the opposite of the calm, in control vibe I was aiming for. I'd never ask for it again.
My sister, on the other hand, absolutely loved it.

Everyone’s different, i loved it!

ReluctantSwimMum · 31/08/2025 07:55

It worked perfectly for me in my first labour. I'd been in labour on and off for 5 days, barely slept, and pethidine allowed me to rest while still in labour, it was bliss.

Pethidine dosing is based on weight rather than ‘blood levels’. Some people just react weirdly to it. Occasionally IM injections are more IV than IM and then peak blood concentrations come higher than usual. There is an opioid antidote (naloxone) that can be used for patients who do develop respiratory depression. Pethidine’s a bit of a marmite drug.

I loved it!

cupfinalchaos · 31/08/2025 21:11

That’s horrific. I was told not to have it as affected the baby but this advice is probably outdated now.

RosesAndHellebores · 31/08/2025 21:16

Awful stuff. I had it after a big.op and in labour with ds. Both times.did Littlemore.the pain but.provided what I can only describe as an "out of body" experience. I just watched me in pain.

Neither time was I asked if I wanted it and both times it was given without my consent.

jjpollypocket · 31/08/2025 21:26

I loved it while in labour with my first but my baby wasn’t breathing when born and it took quite a while to get her going which was absolutely terrifying and soon sobered me up! They said it was probably due to the pethadine! I never had it again with my other 3 births.

FMc208 · 01/09/2025 08:36

I absolutely hated it. All it did was take away my control, not the pain. So I was laying there still feeling the same level of pain but with no control over my body, I couldn’t move. Awful.

Tiredofwhataboutery · 01/09/2025 08:39

I didn’t like it either it just made me feel spacey, like I couldn’t communicate properly. I did have an epidural one pregnancy and that was fab pain free but also in control.
