Anyone had a small baby?

I had a very small baby in my first pregnancy. I’m 23 weeks pregnant again and wondering how likely it is this one will also be small?

My first had normal growth until the third trimester when it stopped and he was born on the 2nd centile although I did get to 39 weeks which was mainly due to the incompetence of the doctors!

If you’ve had a baby with FGR did you have another?

Three babies, middle one was small, other two were fine. She was 5lb12 when I had a c section with her at 37 weeks (as she'd stopped growing on growth scans which were triggered by my tiny bump) so she was small but not tiny. They said the placenta looked 'abnormal' and sent it off for testing but I never heard anything back. My other two were both pretty average sized, so I guess it was just a random unlucky fluke to have placental issues for us. I assume you're having growth scans to keep an eye on things this time around?

Yes I’m having growth scans and had a Doppler scan at 20 weeks which was normal although my DS was growing normally then. I also had a tiny bump! He was 5lb 10oz at 39 weeks so very small. My placenta was also very small.

Yes my first was 5lb 13 and then dropped to 5lb 5 I think it was, took a while to start gaining weight.
My second, born only 15 months later, was 9lb 1!

Baby 2 of 3 was 5 1/4 lbs. Only 10 days before due date so not really premature. No warning or lack of movement. I was told that the placenta was gritty when examined by midwife. May have been as issue?
She fed well from the start. You could practically see her growing!

Small ISH babies here DD1 born at 40+2 and 6lbs 1oz, 5th centile.

DD2 born at 39+2, 6lbs 3oz and 8th centile. Monitored for growth the second time as DD1 small for gestational age.

Very healthy pregnancy and normal birth. I am under 9 stone as an adult and 5ft 4. I was also a smaller baby.

DD1 is on 9th centile and 5 and DD2 has shot up to the 50th at 21 months. I think it's genetics for us. My family are all slim built. Both children are very healthy. Are you or your family on the smaller side OP?

Pinkstuffs · 28/08/2025 18:53

We are quite average sized to be honest, I am slim but 5ft 7, DH is about 5ft 11? DS1 is still tiny at almost 18 months!

My second had IUGR and was just over 4lb. He was on the 96th centile by 3 months — the paediatrician said that where growth is restricted, there will often be a corrective growth spurt.

My first baby was 5lb 4 - 2nd centile - emergency cesearon due to low movement, worries about growth and low amniotic fluid. She'a now 12 and very healthy height and weight. My second was born full term at 6lb 5 - uncomplicated pregnancy - she was small as well. I think maybe some people just have smaller babies.

RFG with first baby due to low Papp a. Wasn’t actually as small as growth scans predicted (he was 6lb at 38 weeks), but second baby was 7lb12!

@Pinkstuffs are you on aspirin? My friend had a very small baby and has been on aspirin since 12 weeks with 2nd baby on midwives advise to try reduce risk of another small baby

Melancholyflower · 29/08/2025 18:08

My second was born at 40+5 and weighed 6 lb. He grew up to be a 6'2" rower.

twobabiesandapup · 29/08/2025 18:56

Not massively small but my first was born at 40+3 and was 6lb 13oz, and then my second was born at 40+2 and was 8lb 3oz. I had to go in for growth scans with them both at 40 weeks because they were concerned that their weight had dropped off significantly but when they were born it transpired that they hadn’t - they were both just too low down to measure properly!
