Concerned and upset with my first ultrasound?

I’m either 5W & 2D or 4W & 6D, they said they couldn’t date me until later on. I had my scan today and they just said “it’s too early”. They’ve written on my report that the gestational sac was empty? But as you can see, it’s not empty but what is visible does not look like a yolk sac? She did say “I can see the start of something trying to grow but it’s too early” referring to a yolk sac - I left my scan with more questions and worries than anything else. I feel like it’s abnormal as I haven’t seen any scan online that looks like mine.

It's very early to have a scan so it probably isn't possible to give you much information. If it was one of those places offering 'reassurance' scans and the knew you were only 5 weeks they shouldn't have agreed to scan you really.

It is too early... it's very much just watch and wait at this stage, good luck!

I think this shows why it’s best (unless you’re concerned about an ectopic or something) to wait a bit longer before having an early scan. Even EPUs tend to say they won’t scan you until 6 weeks. At this point it’s just too inconclusive. I had an early scan (to confirm when to take the NIPT test) at 8+5 and it was much more reassuring, as there was more there for the sonographer to see, including the heartbeat. I’m sure all’s ok, but if you’re concerned book another one for a couple of weeks time. Good luck!

OP it's really just too early for a scan, assuming no reason for one. I never had one before 7-8 weeks, because what's the point? Better to wait and then be able to see something.

OurChristmasMiracle · 27/08/2025 17:03

I had a scan at what I would have been 5weeks 4 days. They dated me at 5 weeks. Couldn’t see anything could only confirm a pregnancy. Said pregnancy is now a boisterous 2 year old. I was so worried for the next 7 weeks, when I went to my 12 week scan they dated me at 12weeks and 4 days- exactly what I should have been by my dates. Please don’t stress

PurpleTurtleMoose · 27/08/2025 17:07

I can completely understand how stressful it is to come out from a scan with no information. Unfortunately the reason they can't tell you anything is that it IS too early for a scan. Most places won't scan this early as they can't know anything; that's why you probably haven't seen scans looking this way.

I know the wait is awful but I don't think there's anything else to do but wait until you're further along for another scan

Starlight7080 · 27/08/2025 17:09

Did you have a medical reason for the early scan?
I would just wait till the 12/13 week mark for scan . Its far to early at the moment.

Jujujudo · 27/08/2025 17:11

It’s so hard waiting isn’t? This could be a viable embryo that’s not showing up yet, or you have to prepare yourself for an empty sac. I had this with my 3rd pregnancy. I had my first scan after a positive home then blood test and at 5 weeks I was told the sac was empty but I needed to wait another week at least to be certain. At 6 weeks I had another scan and the sac was empty. The Dr suggested to wait to see if I would miscarry, or arrange for a D and C week 7. I waited 2 more weeks, had another scan, which showed an empty sac, then had a D and C week 7.5.
i know it’s so hard, every minute is another minute of uncertainty - but try to wait a little longer and have another scan. It may be an empty sac, in which case you know you are able to conceive, so you wait and try again, or it’s a viable pregnancy.
I went on to have my second and last child at age 43 after 2 miscarriages. Sending love.

I should have stated in my original post! This is my 4th pregnancy this year, one of which was ectopic which is why I was brought in for an early scan.

So all they are really looking for is that your pregnancy is in the right location - at that early a stage everything else is too small to confirm anything really! It's best to have a scan from 7 weeks ish to see things more clearly and start to get measurements. Even then they can be easily out as baby is so tiny.

CrotchetyQuaver · 27/08/2025 17:35

Well the scan has done it's job inasmuch as you now know that the egg made it to the uterus, but yes otherwise far too early to see anything...
