Heavy bleeding at 13 weeks .... (tmi)

I went to the toilet this morning to discover that I was bleeding quite heavily to the point where I couldn't really move from the toilet. I passed several large clots and feared that I must be miscarrying. I have already had bleeding at 7 and 11 weeks!

I phoned my dr who tried to book a scan for me at the EPU but they had no spaces until Weds next week!! I have a Nuchal Fold scan on Tuesday anyway.

So Dr told me to come into the surgery and she would listen for a heartbeat. She was at the point of giving up trying when amazingly we heard the baby's HB.

She told me that she was as amazed as me! She pointed out that it didn't mean I was 'out of the woods yet' (her words!). However, she has told me to get total bedrest until my scan on Tuesday. This is not really possible as my two DDs are only 2 and 3 and my husband is working for most of the weekend and unable to take the time off.

The Dr told me that the heavy bleeding could be the result of a low lying placenta which could result in placenta previa. I am not sure exactly what this means for me throughout my pregnancy, although I understand that it means the placenta is covering the cervix... and could result in a c-section.

Having had two very easy pregnancies and two vaginal deliveries, I am now worrying that I am heading for a difficult few months.

Sorry for the length of the post. Hoping that there may be some positive stories out there.....

Oh, you poor thing; you must be beside yourself with worry . Is there no-one who can come and help out with the kids, family or a close friend? I'm sure people will be more than happy to help out.

My SIL had heavy bleeding until 20 weeks with her last pregnancy and was admitted on two occasions. They finally discovered that she had quite a large haematoma between the placenta and the wall of her uterus and this was where it was coming from. Her last big bleed at 20 weeks was the clotc coming away and she was fine after that. She went on to deliver healthy twin boys at 39 weeks.

If it is placenta praevia, it sometimes resolves itself. I've read stories on here of low lying placent at the 12 weeks scan that had "moved" by the 20 week scan. Of course, I don't think it actually moves, but the lower segment of the uterus expands below the pacenta iyswim.

Good Luck for tuesday and take it as easy as you can

i bled with dd until 23 weeks, the placenta had torn away slightly. bed rest is vital, if no-one can help with your dd's, get your dh to lay out stuff like colouring, other toys set up, dvd's etc, plus snacks, as much as he can do to help in the evening, and just try and stay on your sofa during the day, have cinema days with the girls. try to bend as little as possible.

i know it's not always easy to rest, when i had all my problems we didn't have any other dc's to look after but it all stemmed from me doing far too much, by the time i was 11 weeks pg, we'd moved house twice, first to my mums for 5 weeks till the purchase was completed, and then to our new house

Thanks for your quick replies.

Unfortunately I haven't lived where I am for long and only have a sister nearby. She has a three week old and a 2 year old, so pretty busy at the moment and don't want to impose too much, although she has said she will come over tomorrow which will be a help.

Good idea to lay out things for kids and snacks ready in advance. We did watch a film this afternoon (well DD2 and I fell asleep but DD1 watched a film!)

The hardest thing is the lack of answers really. I wouldn't have worried too much, if it hadn't been for the size of the clots. I now have a slight tummy ache but I think I am getting paranoid. DH working until late, but DDs fast asleep now.

Is there any way your DH can take the time off work? Surely he is allowed time of for family emergencies?

You should really get as much rest as you can.....You might find CBeebies invaluable and who cares if the kids don't get a proper wash tomorrow; a little healthy neglect is good for them once in a while.

I hope everything is OK

excitedfornumber2 · 31/05/2008 08:29

how are you feeling today?, sorry your experiencing this problems and the stress of worrying about entertaining your other DC must be making it ten times worse. Take carex

dizzydixies · 31/05/2008 08:37

jenski I started bleeding very heavily with this pg

I thought I was about 8wks pg but went to EPU who told me I was 12 and all fine apart from an area of membrane seperation and a large clot that had to pass - the problem with that is the size of the clot in comparison to the size of the baby at that time meant it could come away bringing everything with it - therefore sit up and let it pass slowly if it had to pass at all

am not meaning to frighten/scare you just ler you know it IS possible to bleed but have a continued healthy pregnancy

hadn't heard of this before but was told to rest as much as possible (not easy with 2dc and a husband that works shifts) but just ignore anything that doesn't need doing and get your feet up

when I saw the consulant and spoke to him about it he explained that they ask all pregnant woman to take extra care of themselves but in a situation like this to be extra vigilent - no heavy lifting/pushing heavy trolleys /sudden jerky movements etc

it IS vital almost impossible but vital and I find it very hard to sit on my arse and do NOTHING - hence how I found Mumsnet

I finally got the all clear from hosp 2wks ago at 29wks and am only now beginning to relax and accept am pregnant

please take care of yourself - tesco shop online, tv for a wee while won't damage the kids, hopefully its nice weather for them to be chucked into the garden, get dh to do hoovering/ heavy loads of washing etc!

it CAN be done if not easily

Jenski · 31/05/2008 12:45

Feeling ok and no more bleeding which is a relief. I look a bit washed out though. Trying hard to take it easy!

Interesting to read your story dizzydixies. Is there a name for this kind of problem? Glad to hear you are doing so well now. Definitely on the home straight!
It is hard to consider yourself pregnant when there are complications. Were you admitted at any point Dizzy?

I was never admitted jenski but in and out like a yoyo - they took very good care of me tbh and am very grateful, doesn't matter that its dc3, I had a m/c prior to dd1 and that stays in your mind

I was scanned at 12wks (by EPU upon first heavy bleed)

15wks

18wks

20 wks

29wks - I insisted on a long break as felt I was in and out all the time and consultant said ok as long as no more flesh bleeds

will be in again at 35wks but thats for a growth scan and to discuss birthing options

it was called organised membrane seperation I think, whole lot of technical jargon being banded about the place

dizzydixies · 31/05/2008 13:01

am glad you're feeling ok today and not had anymore bleeding

really cannot stress enough the rest up - certainly helped me

lackaDAISYcal · 01/06/2008 12:53

hope things are still OK re the bleeding jenski and that you are managing to get some rest

keep up posted.

Jenski · 02/06/2008 13:54

I have tried to rest as much as poss over the weekend. Had a really early night last night, only to wake in the early hours, go to the loo and discover more bleeding (not as heavy as on Friday but fresh red blood!) . I still seem to be bleeding on and off now.

I have scan first thing tomorrow, so I guess it is just a case of wait and see! I've reached a point where I just want to know what is going on one way or the other!

Thank you for your kind posts, I shall let you know how it goes tomorrow.

Just read your thread and wanted to say good luck.... all the best tomorrow.

star6 · 02/06/2008 18:47

I have had bleeding on and off and I'm 21 weeks - it happens when I go for a run or very brisk walk or have sex... the dr said I'm fine and nothing to worry about - saw baby on scan and heard heartbeat!! I guess some women just bleed during their pregnancies?? I thought perhaps it was my body miscarrying a twin or something... but they would be able to tell that wouldn't they?

dizzydixies · 02/06/2008 23:37

jenski good luck with your scan, sending positive thoughts your way

Just to let you know about scan today!

Everything was all fine

They could not see reason for bleed and said not to worry and that it would tail off!

I am very happy (as is DH).

Thank you for your support
