real nappies vs disposables

My dp (despite not yet experiencing the reality of nappy changing!) is very keen on using real nappies when our first baby is born. I have had experience of them briefly as a nanny a while ago and it was a pain. I know where he's coming from on the eco-front but is it practical? And if so how does one go about getting the right system going etc? All debate greatefully read!

mcmudda - apologies - looks like i'm replying to you, but hadn't actually seen your post!

good spot on the name - my husband thinks that the first line sounds like "emma was a cornflake girl" - emma being my real name

do you find you need to turn the heat up if you use the radiators to dry nappies?

pootlepod · 26/01/2005 10:13

Cornflake girl, I use tots as my mainstay and don't have outdoor drying space or radiators. I hang them in my bathroom, I've got some blue 'small items peg things from lakeland'. Mind you I have quite a few nappies now, but don't ever remembering running out. Might be worth you getting some terries as well as back up, or even ordering a couple of tots more?
Rainbow ones dry slightly quicker as well.

pootlepod

thanks - that's v encouraging. wouldn't really mind having to buy a few more. everyone seems so positive about tots (and the colours are so great!)

Pootlepod - I followed up your link to the cloth resource and I found this fabulous website called crazycloth. Lovely, lovely funky coloured terry nappies but they are not working at the moment, family commitments. I don't suppose there is anyone else out there that knows of any similar?
Aren't they just gorgeous?

MrsDoolittle · 26/01/2005 10:35

Cornflakegirl - I use totsbots unbleached and rainbow bots. No doubt about it the rainbow bots definately dry more quickly. I love them.
I have all colours but I found that the yellow, green and pink hold their colour best. Unfortunately the beautiful lavender and blue ones dim pretty quickly. Although, I have since learned it is better to wash them at 40 and not 60 degrees.
Anyone else find this?

cornflakegirl · 26/01/2005 11:26

mrs doolittle - crazycloth - i want!

i've seen your many posts elsewhere on the wonders of tots - one of the reasons i want to get them

was thinking pastels for day and whites for night?

Cornflakegirl - Ooops sad isn't it?
I am going to rty an e-mail crazy cloth now

Unbleached and white tots are different. The unbleached ones are the most absorbent, best for night time. I also like to use bumbles at night, their full fleece lining lovely.
Now you have to decide - aplix or nippa?

cornflakegirl · 26/01/2005 12:20

thanks bloss - have been there after you suggested on another thread

mrs d - posed that question already - got lots of helpful replies - am currently thinking nippas for pastels days and aplix for white nights...

pootlepod · 26/01/2005 16:15

Those crazy cloth ones look funky!

I really wish I could sew sometimes, I would make nappies all day.

MrsDoolittle · 28/01/2005 13:43

Do you have any pootlepod?

pootlepod · 28/01/2005 22:39

No, just salivating at the pictures!
