And hold my hand too!

I'm just about to turn 43 and have 3 children who were conceived by just looking at my husband. The youngest is 5.

So for the past year, my cycles have been getting longer and longer and arrive once every 60 days. We normally use condoms.

About 2 weeks ago after a rare night out with DH, I foolishly informed him that my period was just over so we would 'be ok' (too many cocktails!). Two days later, I was in Tesco when I had terrible cramps and stupidly again thought 'gosh these feel just like ovulation pains. How funny when I'm too old to ovulate.' I remember, as I had to sit down and breathe through it for a few minutes but once it passed, I forgot all about it.

Yesterday, out of the blue, my 10 year old DD told me that she had dreamt I was pregnant and then asked me how does a woman know if she is pregnant. I explained that her period doesn't come and then thought, when is mine due?

I looked on my app, and searched my last cycle. I'd got my dates wrong. My period wasn't just over when my DH and I had sex after our night out, it was CD10 and in retrospect, I think I ovulated two or three days later, totally unexpectedly! In my defence, a lot had been going on at the time and I was all over the place.

So. I could, in theory take a test now, BUT we are on holidays somewhere quite remote and I won't have any opportunity to purchase a pregnancy test for another four days!

Anyway, to help keep me sane for the next few days, I'd love to hear your stories and also how likely you think it is would be for me to be pregnant with an accident like this, at 43 with long cycles.

This is intended to be a lighthearted thread to share some of my thoughts, as I don't want to panic my husband without knowing for sure! I know I was very silly so there's no need to labour over that bit 🙂

Too old to ovulate at 43?
Where did you 'learn' that?

Nyckol · 25/08/2025 04:10

43 is still very much possible to get pregnant, it only takes once.
no story on my own, commented mostly to bump the post.

I think it's between 1-5% chamce to get pregnant at your age and miscarriage rate is 33%. (I'm 44 but I try to avoid getting pregnant).

Covid lockdown 2020, finished last pill. Delay in getting another prescription. Bit too much to drink and hey presto dc3 was conceived 2 weeks after last pill. Couldn't believe it happened so fast. Midwife said she heard a lot of similar stories 🤣

My real thoughts were that I've been most likely having annovulatory cycles due to perimenopause. I don't really think 43 is too old to ovulate. It was just a jokey way to refer to my reduced fertility related to my age.

Hi @Redruffle I am in your situation....my period is late and night feel nauseous. I am nearly 44. What was your outcome? Hope all is well! X

I was 16, I’d been with my boyfriend (now DH!) for less than a year and my stepmum (who usually kept my bathroom cupboard stocked up with sanitary products) asked me why I hadn’t been using them. I thought, oh shit! I was 5 months pregnant and DS had been conceived literally the first time I’d had sex. I was lucky my parents were supportive and it all turned out well, I waited another 13 years to have another two babies and we’re all very happy!

No. Plenty of women have children into their 40s. It's not that uncommon.
