Sleeping on back 3rd trimester- anyone have suggestions/advice?

Hi!

I am just in my 3rd Trimester - I always used to sleep on my back before getting pregnant and during my 1st and 2nd trimesters.

I start on my left side and ALWAYS wake up on my back. I have tried what feels like everything to stop doing this but nothing works!

  1. Rolled up towel behind my back (I bloody roll onto it no matter how uncomfortable) I have even tried tying it to my back- still I just sleep on it!
  2. Pillows (again I roll onto them or remove them asleep!)
  3. Something uncomfortable under my back (I either remove it or just lay on it in my sleep)
  4. Pregnancy pillow (i let it go in my sleep and roll onto my back!)

Does anyone have any ideas on how I can stop turning onto my back?

I dont get the nausea or dizziness sleeping on my back but I do wake up uncomfortable and with cramps in my stomach. Sleeping on my side is so much more comfortable I just don’t understand why my body in my sleep chooses to be uncomfortable!!! 😣

TIA!

The official advise is that you should fall asleep on your side but it's OK to wake up on your back. So don't lose sleep over it (ahem).

I used to sleep with quite a few pillows so I wasn’t sat upright, but I was still at a bit of an angle. I’m a side sleeper, but had such bad hip pain in pregnancy I had to sleep on my back.

Its fine if you've went to sleep on your back 😊 just roll back over when you wake up. It happened to me almost every night with both pregnancies that have led to my two beautiful healthy babies. I actually read somewhere if it was starting to do any damage to anything you would be uncomfortable enough to notice something was wrong (cant give facts to back that up though but read it a few times)

I’m sure the advice is to avoid it- as in try and fall asleep on your side if possible, but not to worry if you wake up on your back, just turn to your side when/if you wake up.
I really wouldn’t worry, it seems like you’ve tried most things to prevent it but it’s just one of those things!

Also a back sleeper. Did so in my other pregnancies too and they are both fine. A do find it uncomfortable after a certain period and find myself rolling to my side for a little relief now that baby is getting heavier.
I've found that having a knee bent and out makes me not fully lay on my back, with just enough of an angle that baby isn't pressing down on me but I can get my shoulders and upper back flat on the bed if that makes sense?
Either way, I wouldn't worry too much, not much longer to have to deal with just waking up and rearranging when you're on your back
