Third pregnancy this year, doctor won't prescribe me progesterone or do a hcg blood test

I had a miscarriage back in March this year and 1 in May, I found out im pregnant again last week, I have been to the doctors today to ask for progesterone and hcg blood test but my doctor basically said there is no evidence that progesterone will help my pregnancy and only hcg blood test for people that are bleeding. I have known people be prescribed progesterone and they have never had any miscarriages. Is this right?! When i had the last miscarriage the nurse told me if I was to get pregnant again to contact my GP and ask for these 2 things. Any advice will be helpful.

Unfortunately yes it is right. You wouldn’t be eligible for NHS recurrent miscarriage testing until you’ve had 3 consecutive miscarriages and if those tests showed these things would be helpful then at that point they are prescribed- at least where we are. You could pay to go privately to request them instead though.

I was given progesterone by EPAU after one MC. I did have some spotting at the time. Once EPAU prescribed it, my GP then continued the prescription based on the hospital’s assessment.

I was also given progesterone for my pregnancy after one miscarriage. I got it through EPU, not the GP.

I was given progesterone after 2 miscarriages by the epu although I qualified for the reoccurring miscarriage team after 2 losses due to my age.
You could try phoning the epu. They did also do HCG levels but only because I hadn't had a period since my last miscarriage and they needed to estimate how pregnant I was to do an early scan to check the pregnancy was in the right place before prescribing the progesterone. If it's any hope I'm now 34 weeks in my third pregnancy.

I’ve had progesterone before for previous pregnancies but the research has changed and they now don’t recommend as standard. My pregnancy last year didn’t qualify.

Our area is the same as this and I'm sure it's only recommended now not only after 3 recurrent miscarriages but also bleeding in current pregnancy. GPs generally won't prescribed it, it's usually done by a consultant or EPAU and they don't test HCG as standard either.

As others have said private may be your best option.

Can you contact your EPU? I got given progesterone at 6 weeks when they were able to confirm the pregnancy was in the correct place. I’d had previous miscarriages and bleeding but they still wouldn’t prescribe before a scan had confirmed correct location.
My GP previously also refused HCG testing due to limited resources despite me being sat there sobbing and bleeding (unfortunately that pregnancy ended in miscarriage) so I don’t think HCG testing is standard unless under fertility already.
I’m now 18 weeks after 3 miscarriages in a year and a half 🤞🏼 had progesterone from 6 weeks and aspirin from 12 weeks and so far so good.

if you’re desperate and not having any joy - Plan Your Baby (online) do hcg and progesterone blood tests and progesterone prescriptions if needed (I got a prescription from them when TTC)
