Ultrasound

I went for an ultrasound today to confirm pregnancy, and he scanned my belly for 5 minutes. Than he smiled at me and told me to empty my bladder and told me to wait for the results in 2 days and to go see my doctor and discuss the results with him. I’m kind of emotional about it. Has anyone else experienced this. What does this mean it’s out me into a tiny spiral.

That would absolutely make anyone spiral; I'm surprised they told you nothing at all?

My experience has always been that the sonographer tells you what they're seeing (even if it's in basic terms, with a more detailed doctor discussion later). It seems very unfair to leave you guessing for 2 days

Window to the womb type place?

mummyyof1 · 14/08/2025 14:24

@PurpleTurtleMoose it’s honestly so horrible, my husband and I just sat there confused. We’ve had so many miscarriages and we just wanted to know. So now it’s like making me think the worst 💔

@Flederjowhat dkes that mean?

Baby26 · 14/08/2025 14:29

@mummyyof1 they are asking if that's the company who scanned you.

I doubt it is as I've just had a scan with them today. Was told there was no heartbeat there and then and were very clear that I've had a missed miscarriage.

@Flederjowhat dkes that mean?

Private scan type place or a obgyn office?

mummyyof1 · 14/08/2025 14:32

@Baby26aw, I’m so sorry! 😢
we’ve been trying for 5 years, so I hope everyone’s rainbow baby comes sometimes soon. ✨

Ahhhh ok you're the poster who booked for an ultrasound and bloods to confirm pregnancy but you hadn't even done a pregnancy test?

I'm sorry it's taking a while for you and you have confusing symptoms. Hope you've had all the usual tests and possible exploratory investigations?

LavaHoover · 14/08/2025 15:01

Maybe things are different in Australia - maybe post your question on an Australian chat forum?
In the UK the sonographer always tells you what they're seeing. If they can't see anything, they say that. If they see something they can't be certain of, they say that. But they don't just say nothing at all.

Moosey898 · 14/08/2025 15:08

Have you taken a pregnancy test, and how far along should you be?

TenThousandSpoons00 · 14/08/2025 22:30

OP - further to PP comments I had a look at your previous post - you say you had a negative home test only 3-4 days ago? So even if you are pregnant you are super super early, like 4-5 weeks maximum, far too early to see anything on scan??
have you or your doctor done another pregnancy test since your last post?
I agree it’s unusual that the sonographer wouldn’t say anything at all at your scan, but I would be assuming they’ve seen nothing given it’s just so early. These scans <6 weeks are almost never helpful to anyone…
all the best with your TTC journey

Myme · 15/08/2025 06:31

Your previous post also said the doctor was going to do a blood test. Have you had that done as well yet?

To be honest, I think chances are you’re not pregnant and you’ve just had a weird period. You did get some bleeding the day you were due and the test is negative. The blood test should confirm that much better than the scan. Because even if you are pregnant at this early stage quite honestly nothing can be seen on a scan. Especially if it’s an external scan on your stomach. In this country early scans tend to be transvaginal for that reason. I think the best bet is a blood test. At this early stage it will give you day better answers than a scan.

I’m from Australia. I’m so sorry this happened to you. I’ve been pregnant 6 times. The ultrasound person has always told me what they see and projected it on a screen for me to watch - even when it was a miscarriage or empty sack.
For my high risk pregnancy i was asked to sit in a waiting room after while i waited for a genetist to come and discuss unusal findings. But it was a matter of minutes.

was this at the hospital? I have heard that some hospitals have rules about what their technicians are allowed to say. But never experienced it myself

Maybe it’s different because it isn’t really clear if the OP is pregnant or not? She hasn’t had a positive test at any point going by her last post. The only reason she booked for bloods and a scan was because her last period was lighter than usual. Do places in Australia routinely do scans on people just purely by request even with negative pregnancy tests? And would they do one this early on? Because in the UK they don’t tend to do them at 4-5 weeks unless they suspect an ectopic because there really isn’t anything to see. A scan at 4 weeks would likely only show a thickened lining so you couldn’t really confirm anything either way. Especially when the OP said it was an external scan. Normally early scans are transvaginal in this country anyway.
