5 weeks pregnant and worried about flying

Hi,

I’m 5 weeks pregnant and due to fly on Friday (2 1/2 hours) then back on Monday.

I’m 43 and had two miscarriages last year. I’m currently on progesterone pessaries.

I felt ok about flying but I’m now feeling really nervous that I’m doing the wrong thing.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

Thanks

What is it you’re worried about?

Aquacoast9 · 13/08/2025 20:54

Just it being bad for the pregnancy or causing a miscarriage.

I’ve had several miscarriages so understand your worry.
I have an immune disorder so I’ve been on aspirin and heparin from day one. Flew at 11 weeks and absolutely no issue. 38 weeks today x

Obvs op has had miscarriages and is anxious. I don’t understand why you’d reply with this pointless comment

It’s not a pointless comment. OP might have had thoughts more in depth about how flying could cause a miscarriage exactly and then she could perhaps be reassured by hearing that those specific things are not dangerous to a pregnancy at 5 weeks.

Flying is not bad for pregnancy (female pilots can fly while pregnant so long as they feel well). I flew both long and short haul at 6 and 8 weeks, and again short haul at 32 and 33 weeks.

That said, if it’s going to make you very anxious and it’s not necessary then don’t feel obliged to. Take care of yourself.

I flew to Mexico on a 10 hour flights at 5 weeks and back at 7 weeks then to Egypt at 30 weeks. There’s no known risks of flying pregnancy at this stage

Hi,

Thank you very much everyone for your posts. You have reassured me. I think it’s easy to get down a rabbit hole of concerns (well it is for me anyway).

Thanks again

Actually, I was asking about whether she’s worried the flight causing a miscarriage. Or being away and something being wrong and she’s not at home. Of course she’d be anxious, that’s obvious. But knowing a bit more would help give appropriate advice. So wind your neck in.

I've done 2 return short haul and 2 return long haul flights between 5 and 19 weeks pregnant this pregnancy. I've also had 4 previous miscarriages so totally understand why you'd be nervous. Flying is not bad for pregnancy. The recommendations are to keep mobile and hydrated, particularly on a long flight. It's being stationary for long periods of time that is the risk for blood clots, not flying as such. For 2.5hrs I wouldn't worry 🙂 I have found sticking to water and juice on flights (nothing fizzy!) helps as fizzy drinks make me feel bloated.

I was advised not to fly to a family members wedding around that time of pregnancy (was high risk). But the doctors concerns were more with the medical care of the country in case something was to happen while i was there and not the flight itself.
Maybe talk to your doctor about your concerns. They will be able to give you reassurance or a no flying note, depending which way the talk goes.

Double post.

Hi OP, try not to worry. There are no known risks and nothing about the flight will affect the pregnancy. As PP said, stay very hydrated, move around, limit stress where you can so get fast track or check all bags in whatever that might be and try to enjoy it. I have been in your position so I know your anxiety. Make sure you have travel insurance (everyone should regardless of pregnancy!) and you’ll be fine.
