Morning Sickness Hell

I know there are so many threads about morning sickness and I’m sure mine isn’t worse than anyone else’s but this is really hell. It gets me down to the point where I can’t enjoy being pregnant because I feel like hell all the time. My MIL said to me the other day not to stress about anything (she was referring to family, work etc) because we should be enjoying the pregnancy and then I realised I’m not because all of the sickness. I hate it! And no one ever complains in real life about how rough you feel in the first trimester. Everyone seems to just crack on?!

I feel sick when I wake up, and really bad in the afternoon / evenings. I’m eating well, sometimes fruit actually makes me throw up and there are smells that make me GAG.

I can’t even stay hydrated just from water because if I drink water that also makes me gag. So I’ve been sticking to pineapple juice or tropical juice.

I know there’s medication for people who are constantly physically sick but I wonder if there’s anything I can take just for the nausea? The few times I have physically been sick I’ve actually felt better afterwards… it’s like when you’re drunk and you have a tactical chunder because you know you’ll feel better after.

i actually threw up in a car park the other day…. (Not tactical) but it’s so embarrassing because you don’t want to tell strangers that you’re pregnant (they might not care!)

in addition to, I have such a strong reversion to my SO, and also have an aversion to any sort of housework. Thankfully he is so supportive and is doing it ALL but this isn’t my usual self and I just want to be back to normal. I’m nearly 11 weeks… is it going to end soon?

Do you think you could work from home instead, or not feel up to working at all?

i can absolutely work from home instead. currently I have just over an hour commute into London each day where I’m feeling sick. And then in the office when I’m feeling sick I do sometimes make a funny face - and I’m not wanting everyone to know about the pregnancy yet so I think I’d be much comfortable just to have the option and no pressure of coming into the office just until this settles down

I can understand that. It's hard to find a balance. I was lucky I worked from home basically full time in my first trimester.

i feel exactly the same. I’m 6+2 and am currently crying in bed trying to eat a bagel. I woke up this morning and the smell of the kitchen sent me straight into the bathroom to throw up. Brushing my teeth makes me throw up. I can’t face going into work but also don’t want anyone to know. I’ve told my manager but might come up with an excuse to tell everyone else (like I’ve hurt an ankle or something) as my absence will be conspicuous.

how far along are you? It is really hard, but it won’t be forever. We just have to take one day at a time

I am so sorry! I hope the bagel helps you - carbs has definitely helped me (I’ve never eaten so many carbs). I was on holiday in the states when I was 6 weeks on a ‘road trip’, sometimes being in the passenger seat for 7 hours a day. It was horrific so I know exactly how you feel, and completely and utterly shattered. It did not help that it was late 36 degrees!

I thought it couldn’t get worse - but for me the worse part peaked at 9 weeks and although I’m not as tired, the sense of smell and the wrenching are still very strong at 11 weeks. I stupidly had one sip of water this morning to take my folic acid and I threw it straight back up…

I thought it was meant to stop by the end of the first trimester (so hopefully soon for me) but I’ve also heard this could go on for the remainder of pregnancy.

exactly just take one day at a time, I’ve also told my manager but like you, I’m reluctant for the whole office to find out until after my scan next week.

i really hope you feel better soon!! X

ugh im in the same boat mate and it’s horrible. 12 weeks.

My midwife was excellent, when I said I was struggling with the constant nausea she contacted by GP and I was given Prochlorperazine which helped a lot. Although I was all about the carbs, I read that protein can really help so I kept a stack of trek protein bars next to my bed and ate one before I got up in the morning.

I am incredibly sorry to hear - that is just horrendous and I’m glad to hear you felt loads better after giving birth.

can I ask - how on earth do you deal with feeling this sick when you have another toddler / baby / child to take care of? I keep thinking it’s bad enough now but when / if we have another how am I going to cope with a toddler wanting attention all the time :(

The women I’ve seen in my office previously seemed to be in every single day in their first trimesters (not that I knew that they were pregnant at the time) but they never seemed to wfh or look sick. I actually feel that I LOOK sick in the office with the strong facial expressions if I feel sick and I’ve had to wfh a bunch of times

I was so scared of this after having HG in my first pregnancy, that’s why there’s a 10 year gap between my first 2!
However my 2nd pregnancy was the opposite of my first and I wasn’t sick or even had any nausea

candyflossxox · 13/08/2025 18:32

Im 24 weeks and have been on xonvea since week since because of severe sickness and nausea. It literally is a life saver!! As soon as I stop it, it all comes back.

is it pathetic if I get my doctor to write me off sick so I can wfh the next couple weeks? It would make me feel so much more comfortable knowing if I need to be sick I can do so in my own bathroom. And I’m feeling lethargic and horrible in the office. It’s also August so super, super quiet at work (it’s office based) and I think it could really help me but not sure if I sound dramatic because I’m sure the women in the office that had kids 20 years ago didn’t ask to wfh

Absolutely not pathetic. Take care of yourself! You're growing a whole new person, it's tough at the best of times. You'll probably be a lot more productive anyway so it'll benefit your employer too tbh.
You said at the top that your sickness probably isn't worse than anyone else's. It sounds like it's worse than a lot of women's. Some nausea is common but most women just don't have it that bad or for that long. Please don't think you need to just deal with it like everyone else.
If there's something you can do to make it more tolerable, do it.
