Those that have had uncomplicated births and First Time mums, how long did the hospital keep you in? Just want to grasp an idea of what to expect - I know every situation is different I'm just wondering how long others have been kept in.

I was in a few days with DD as she was just below the bilirubin threshold for jaundice so they wanted to monitor that until they were satisfied it had decreased enough.

Generally if everything is plain sailing and the baby has had a wee and a poo and mum has had a wee then you can go home. My hospital trust likes you to stay for 8 hours. Also they make you stay overnight if you’ve given birth overnight. Also depends if the doctor has been to check baby’s reflexes, heart and done the hearing check etc.

2 nights as standard where I am (mainland European country). Standard check for the little one (bloods, vitamins, full body check, hearing) etc by a paediatrician on day 3 then discharged.

First time mum, nothing complicated (induced, vaginal birth)

Gave birth to DD at 7am was home at 11pm no complications apart from 2nd degree tear. Would’ve been home sooner but they thought they heard a murmur on her heart when they done the newborn checks so spent about 6 hours waiting for a consultant to (thankfully) give us the all clear.
gave birth to DS at 6am was home at 3pm again no complications apart from a 2nd degree tear..& I only had gas &air with both. I’m UK

Once they've done the newborn checks and seen that baby is feeding (either breast or bottle) and you've been for a wee is normal. So if you're uncomplicated less than 24hours. Same day if you give birth early, overnight if you give birth late.

My 2nd DD was a planned section and we were out at 11am the next day (she was born at 10am).

One night both times. They were happy to discharge me after a few hours but would have been middle of the night so I had no wish to.

I gave birth at 11.45 and we were discharged ~18.00. They said I could stay at the ward one night, but we wanted to go home. Baby fed twice in the hospital, so we felt it was 'safe' for us to go.

Btowngirl · 08/08/2025 15:33

DD1 (delivered by my wife) - uncomplicated on midwife lead unit, tear & stitches though. Born at 11am and we left by 7pm.

DD2 (delivered by me) uncomplicated but very quick and strep b so had to stay in 24 hours for baby to get hourly obs

malimoon · 08/08/2025 15:52

Gave birth 2pm Friday, left 7pm Saturday. Had to stay overnight as I had had an epidural and baby was born more than 24 hours after my waters went so needed monitoring. Could have left earlier but we were waiting for his newborn checks and there was a queue 😅

MomToBe2025xx · 08/08/2025 16:14

Gave birth via c section at 10.30 am on the 30th April and was home 4.30pm on the 1st May 🤗

Prepare for one night, plan for 3.
Out of my NCT group 6 of 7 us were in for 3 days for various reasons not all of which were apparent before labour. So I'd pack for one night but maybe have a rucksack somewhere with enough for 2 further nights.

AwkwardPaws27 · 08/08/2025 20:13

I went home after 6 hours (also in England, first labour, 2nd degree tears). I specifically asked to though - I could have stayed longer - but I was keen to go home as the postnatal ward sounded like the least restful place to be.
They actually let me stay in the room I laboured in, as nobody else needed it & they weren't too busy, which was great as we didn't need to move onto the ward.

With DC1 the birth was straightforward but long. There was more than 24 hours between waters breaking and the time of birth, so I was kept in for 24 hours due to the increased risk of infection.

With DC2 and DC3 it was around 12 hours or so.
