Im 34 weeks pregnant and just been told to do a pre birth assesment with social services because I had an ambulance come to me few weeks back and one of the paramedics reported I smelt of stale alcohol (I haven't been drinking) i dont know why they said that because all the other doctors said i didnt smell at all but now social services want to get involved and assess me. What does this involve? I dont want them on my case when im gonna be having a baby in a few weeks and im in the process of moving house. Would they visit me once and that be it? Or could they end up getting involved constantly im worried about them trying to accuse me of things that aren't true and causing issues that dont exist I just want them to leave me alone

It sounds like maybe you aroused suspicious because it is a bit strange to be sat outside for hours by yourself if you were worried about fainting. If you've got lots of other protective factors, supportive partner, secure accommodation etc, they most likely will just come and visit, check in with other professionals working with you e.g. midwife, consultant if you have one. Be really open to support - dont e.g. turn down health visiting appointments, you need to be seen to be open and welcoming to support.

Wishing you all the best with baby x

They will snoop, be sure your bathroom & medicine cabinet is clean.
The mostly arrive in pairs so one can distract while they snoop.

They often misinterpret things. So keep in mind that might see something that you don’t, or that doesn’t exist. Like glasses drying by sink they will assume were for alcohol….

JohnofWessex · 07/08/2025 18:15

Why not ask for your medical records?

It should then show who thought you smelt of drink and more importantly who didnt

It says in the report the midwives didnt think I smelt and that it was a paramedic they even said to me it might of been the area

Any chance you've been decorating. Some of the paint chemicals and cleaners can smelly vaguely ethanol-ly if spilt on clothing.

ByBlueLion · 07/08/2025 18:47

@Annikin271 have they tested your urine/bloods recently? less likely without other symptoms happening but some people who are developing diabetic hypoglycaemia can smell of alcohol due to ketones.

Everyday99 · 07/08/2025 18:49

You've been dealt a nasty card by someone who even might has sensory issues. By that logic, each English woman should give birth with ss attached to them because they all drink in uni

In what context you told them you drank when younger. Did you use the word alcoholic ???

No I said I wouldn't of considerd it a problem and that I drank on my days off work which is once or twice a week I'd drink a bottle of vodka per drinking session when the social spoke to me they said they were told I said drank a bottle of vodka a day which isnt true I work full time and part time uni so wouldn't even be able to do that

There’s no snooping involved. It’s very clear that certain things need to be checked :
Is there food in fridge / cupboards ?
Is the home clean and safe?
Are any animals well looked after / safe?
If pregnant and due soon is everything ready for baby eg crib/cot , clothes , nappies etc .
