Bleeding gums during pregnancy

Hello all, I'm about three months pregnant and my gums, particularly upper gums, are bleeding badly every time I brush my teeth (I use an electric toothbrush). Wasn't like this before pregnancy, or certainly not as severe.
I had a dentist's appointment two weeks ago which I cancelled. I read somewhere online that non-urgent dental appointments are best avoided in the first trimester, better to wait until the second trimester when the foetus will be more stable. So I don't regret cancelling the appointment but now I'm wondering if bleeding gums is common, and any recommendations as to what I can do about it, please.
Thank you.

I have the same thing. Bleeding when I brush and sore when I eat. I’m 12 weeks

Yes it's common. Dental problems are very common in pregnancy, as the baby takes so much calcium etc from you to grow. That's why dental care is free during pregnancy and for 1 year after (at least it is in Scotland, not sure about England). After 2 pregnancies, my gums were in very bad shape and I ended up with periodontal disease. I have managed to get it from severe to mild, but my gums look worse than they were pre-pregnancy. I would get booked in for a check up and they can advise you from there.

I'd get a check up, personally I find a water flosser with a little bit of mouthwash is really good at keeping my gums healthy - do check that mouthwash is ok to use in pregnancy.

Make sure you are angling the toothbrush head so half is brushing the gums and half the teeth, slowly move around the mouth, 3 seconds on each tooth surface, brush for 2.5 mins with electric toothbrush. Also make a check up appt it's not dangerous at all. I am a dentist :)

I’m not registered at a dentist. All the waiting times is 2/3 years 😩. Iv got some corsodyl toothpaste and mouthwash today so I hope that helps. My teeth have been so sore and sensitive today

My gums were bleeding a lot during first and majority of 2nd trimester. Every time I brushed my teeth I was spitting out bright red. Haven’t seen any blood in a while now and I’m 30 weeks.
