Ultrasound measuring 4-5 weeks when I thought I was 6+

Slightly worried as went for an early reassurance scan on Friday, I thought I was 6+ weeks but when she scanned me told me I was only measuring 4-5 weeks and she could see a gestational sac but nothing else. She didn’t seem concerned and said this is what she would expect to see at this stage.
Going back next week to be re-scanned.

I’ve also become a bit obsessed with the clear blue digital tests, and I have had 2-3 weeks for the past two weeks now. Surely it should have gone up to 3+?
Really worried I’ve had a missed miscarriage, can anyone relate or provide some reassurance.

The only symptoms I have are tiredness, sore boobs and mild cramping on and off.

This is my first pregnancy so no idea what to expect and the anxiety is insane.

This can go either way unfortunately. In my case it did mean the foetus wasn't developing properly and ended in miscarriage, but I've seen lots of stories on here where it was fine and people had just ovulated later than they'd thought. The rescan will let you know a lot more, but I know how stressful the wait is 💕

Sadly all you can do is wait and see. Were you tracking ovulation and do you have regular periods. For me I’ve had this situation twice and both times it was bad news for me. But there will be plenty of stories online where people have had a more positive outcome.

@JauntyFace @PurpleTurtleMoose Thanks both. Im sorry to hear you’ve had to go through this.
After reading online it’s become clear that it just a waiting game.
I hadn’t been tracking and I have had irregular periods in the past, they have become slightly more regular recently but a lot longer cycle than the average person, with occasional spotting in between.
At the moment I’m hanging onto the positives that haven’t had any typical miscarriage symptoms but know that doesn’t mean I’m in the clear.
Did either of you have any signs or symptoms that it wasn’t going to be a positive outcome?

This happened with my first pregnancy, I booked an early scan at what I thought would be 7w and they said I was measuring more like 5 and to go back in a couple of weeks. My DD is now nearly 3. She wasn’t planned so I wasn’t tracking, had no idea when I ovulated and always had irregular periods. Turns out I just ovulated way later than would be ‘normal’ and everything was fine. The wait can be horrible but that is really all you can do. Hoping you get the news you want the next time you’re scanned ✨

I didn’t have any symptoms no. Had normal pregnancy symptoms the entire time.

The fact you have long cycles does potentially give hope. Pregnancy is dated from your last period and it “assumes” a 28 day cycle where you ovulate on day 14. If you ovulated much later than an average cycle you would be much earlier in pregnancy than you thought. I’d always recommend to be prepared for a bad outcome. But equally there is always that hope for people who aren’t entirely sure of their dates.

If you havnt been tracking and cant pin point when you actually ovulated then it could just be that your wrong with the amount of weeks that you think you should be - the clear blue digital weeks test does seem inline with what the scan shows so thats a good thing. It really is a waiting game im afraid :(

Playgo · 06/08/2025 13:01

Why do you think you’re 6+, do you track ovulation? If you share your dates then we can double check them 😊

I never got a 3+, even when I did the test on the same day as a blood test which showed that my hcg was well over the 3+ threshold. My ten month is currently sitting next to me refusing his nap! I would ban all those ‘how many weeks’ tests if I could, I think they prey on people’s worries.

2618L · 06/08/2025 15:19

@Playgo the 6+ weeks was based off the first day of my last period 17th June. I had my first positive test on digital 1-2 weeks on 16th July. I don’t know when I ovulated as I don’t track. I tested due to feeling off and this was way before my next period was due. My periods are irregular and usually a lot longer than the norm.

Ah that’s exactly what I was thinking might be the case - if your cycles are on the longer side, then you will be less further ahead than you think, because it means you don’t ovulate until later on in your cycle.

So let’s say your cycle is 35 days, you’d be looking at only five weeks pregnant. At this point, what you saw in the scan would be entirely typical and no cause for concern. I’d be cautiously optimistic for your next scan. (I do remember the all consuming anxiety so appreciate this is easier said than done!)
