Coming off Clexane at 17 weeks?

Hi, I have been diagnosed for Impaired fibrinolysis (blood clots can struggle to break down) after 4 miscarriages and was at St Marys special care for early pregnancy. Prescribed 40mg Clexane and was told I will be on this at least until 20 week scan where they can check baby blood flow and decide if to continue with medication or stop it. However after good 10 week scan at St Marys we were discharged and moved to Royal Berks antenatal care. Consultant there without even seeing me send a letter saying I do not need to be on Clexane and that she will not prescribed more for me. Is this even normal? I am fuming. I have called back and explained what I was told at St Marys and awaiting reply but not holding my breath. Anyone came off Clexane before 20 weeks if you have blood clotting issues?

Hi, how did you get on if you don’t mind me asking ? I am on blood thinners until 12 weeks and not sure if it’s too soon to come off ? Hope you got on ok

@AmberRose26 luckily for us St Marys was just amazing and they sent letter to my GP to say I do need to take blood thinners until 20 weeks at least and he approved it. As per consultant who refused it in the first place I will be putting in complaint as she was just awful, she did not even show up for my appointment after 20 week scan either. Blew my mind. I got new consultant and she was a bit better but still had to explain to her what she is actually looking for at the scan. I then came off Clexane around 22 weeks and all been going good so far, currently almost 30 weeks. I have to say NHS care at the moment is in a bit of shocking state if you need anything more than just normal no complications pregnancy care, at least from my experience. Hope all goes ok for you.

@dani130286 hi thanks for your reply, that’s good everything is going fine, I am glad it’s working out for you. Just extra stress you don’t need. if I get as far as 12 weeks I am just not sure whether to come of the injections or push a bit longer to stay on ? I was initially just to stay until my 1st scan , which I have had but asked my fertility clinic to stay on for 12 weeks which they have said is ok, after that , like you I will be under NHS then, I tested positive for sticky bloods , but then on the repeat test it was negative and so they just put me on as a precaution so not sure if coming off at 12 weeks would be ok ? I think I am just over worrying as had 6 miscarriages so we are clutching at everything this time , but is so worrying if I come off at 12 weeks will it hinder the pregnancy at all ?! It’s a big decision.

@AmberRose26 ah bless, I will keep all my fingers crossed for you. Completely understand, I am exactly the same. The problem with NHS is that they are on a very strict guidelines they follow, they do not care really about past, which is quite worrying. We had 3 miscarriages then we managed to have a heathy daughter with no complications - I really think this happened as I already had some tests coming up saying my blood clots takes too long to dissolve so I turned to special diet to thin your blood naturally. NHS was refusing to prescribe any blood thinners as apparently numbers were not high enough. Then we had another miscarriage and were hoping NHS will help but they said no unless we have another 2 miscarriages. We turned to charity Tommys and we qualified for their research so they sent us to St Marys and honestly I will be singing my praises for this place forever. Their tests pointed that actually i need blood thinners for at least 20 weeks, as at 20 weeks the baby is big enough and al organs developed to have no issues from stickier blood. I can't really answer if in your case it can cause problems or not coming off at 12 but I just fought every corner to be on blood thinners until 20 weeks scan - as on that they then check if the blood flow in placenta and cord is ok, if it is ok then I was told to come off them by St Marys so I did as results were all ok. Honestly it was so much stress and fighting daily for this, but I think it was worth it.

Write to them (email is fine) and ask them to confirm in writing that should anything go wrong due to them denying you the medication that was recommended by specialists, they are prepared to take full responsibility.

IME that normally prompts a change in approach.

(also had several miscarriages, but due to APS)

good luck x
