7 week reassurance scan…not very reassuring!

I went for a private abdominal scan at 7+2 today. They told me baby was measuring at 6 weeks and couldn’t find a heartbeat.

There have been no signs of miscarriage and they just said “not to worry” and booked me in to go back in a week.

After doing LOTS of googling, I can see now that 7 weeks might have been too early for an abdominal scan. But the thing that has me confused is that I tend to ovulate early and got my LH peak reading on CD9 so I assumed I should be ahead, not behind.

If anyone has experience / knowledge on the subject it’d be greatly appreciated. I suppose my question is, how worried should I be??

That’s so stressful sorry OP. I think it is a case of wait and see, but I know how slow time goes by in the early days of pregnancy.

PurpleTurtleMoose · 03/08/2025 18:13

I'm sorry, that sounds very stressful. Being honest with you, it could go either way. Sometimes measuring behind can mean the pregnancy isn't developing, but equally there are a lot of stories where the dates were just out and everything is fine. It really is a waiting game, but I know it's horrible being in this limbo zone. 💕

That's very early for abdominal scan I agree. Why didn't they do a TV scan? The clinic I get my private scans done at says they wouldn't look to do abdominal that early because it's so hard to measure properly. They actually showed me the difference between TV and abdominal and in abdominal the edges were sooo much less defined so measurements were off by a lot. When they're that small it can be hard to get precise measurements even TV. I say in terms of worrying I'd be 50/50, it's difficult to say either way. Hope it all turns out okay x

I agree with Wednesdayonline - a lot of clinics don't recommend an abdominal scan under 10 weeks because they're not accurate enough. Can you get a TV scan next week? x

Thanks for taking the time to reply, that’s helpful to know.

No option of a TV with this particular clinic, it seems to be common to offer abdominal scans at 6+ weeks in my area but I could look elsewhere.

You’d think they’d tell you if it was so unreliable but I suppose it’s a business!

I’m sorry you are in this situation, sounds stressful! 😔

I wonder if it is worth contacting your early pregnancy unit - can you self refer in your area? Or ask the GP for a referral?

I would prefer to have a transvaginal nhs scan if I were in your position. Although I’m sure it is absolutely fine for the most part, private clinics are not regulated and they don’t even need to use trained sonographers. If it is worst case scenario I would want to be told by someone who can talk me through the next steps and make all the necessary arrangements.

Keeping everything crossed for you for a healthy pregnancy 🙏

Unfortunately I don't think the NHS offers scans before 12 weeks unless there are symptoms such as bleeding and unusual pain or there have been complications in previous pregnancies.

OP I used window to the womb and found them to be really good - not sure if there are any branches near you? 💐

movingsoonish · 03/08/2025 23:24

There is actually a window to the womb relatively close to me. Given what I know now I don’t think I can trust the original clinic. I’ll think it over and likely go elsewhere hopefully for better news. Thanks all xx

Sending lots of positive thoughts your way!

movingsoonish · 06/08/2025 15:44

Coming back with positive news after my scan at window to the womb, we could see a heartbeat this time. The TV scan was so much clearer than the abdominal one!

Thank you lovely ladies for your support. Hopefully this thread helps someone else in my position and educates those considering an early scan xx
