Pregnancy over 40

Can anyone else give me some hope? I’m 41 and just came on my period after another failed attempt to conceive, have had two miscarriages and a chemical pregnancy in the last three years. Are there any 40 plus women who have managed to conceive? Please give me some happy hopeful news xx

I'm approaching 38 so not technically over 40 but feels pretty close. I'm currently 33 weeks pregnant, having conceived naturally, and still have to pinch myself that this is happening as I didn't think it would. I've had losses in the past, and this is my first pregnancy to progress.

A high proportion of my NCT group were over 40 so it's not at all uncommon these days, and there is definitely hope xx

JulesJules · 16/07/2025 11:55

Yes, I was pregnant for the first time at 40, then at 43. As a pp says, most of us in my NCT group were at least mid-late 30s+, only one person was in her 20s.

Dingdongwhat · 16/07/2025 12:33

I conceived at 39 second cycle of trying, then also at 42 second cycle trying. Absolutely possible!

JellyBean123456 · 16/07/2025 13:20

I had my little boy at 42 and am currently 8 weeks pregnant at age 46. Both were natural conception. I have had 3 miscarriages in between though, so while it is possible it can be difficult. Good luck x

Everythingisokay · 16/07/2025 13:54

Hi OP,

Since it's been three years of TTC which I'm sure would've been mentally draining from you, have you been to any fertility clinics for an assessment or have you considered IVF?

curliegirlie · 16/07/2025 14:04

I’m 42, and after 3 years, two miscarriages bookending the 3 years, and a CP, I finally fell with a stickier one this May and am currently 11 weeks and impatiently waiting my dating scan this Friday! I had an early scan so they could time the NIPT bloods correctly at 8+5 and saw a little bean with a heartbeat, so feeling cautiously hopeful. So, miracles can happen, even when you think you’re out for good (as I did after my MC this March!). Good luck!

CortieTat · 16/07/2025 14:17

Yes, at 46, little one born when I was 47, currently 3 months old. Spontaneous pregnancy although I realise I am very much an outlier I hope this gives you some hope because in my book you are young!

Cinai · 16/07/2025 14:23

I had my boy at 41 after a miscarriage at 40. A friend of mine had both her children after 40. There’s hope!

FancyCatSlave · 16/07/2025 14:26

I conceived easily at 40, no miscarriages though. Easy pregnancy and birth (41.5 at birth). I have several friends the same age who had the same experience but appreciate that’s little comfort when you have difficulties.

Lilly1111 · 16/07/2025 15:23

I really want to thank you all, it’s made me realise there are others in my shoes or very similar shoes and it’s lovely to hear these stories of successful pregnancies. To reply to @Everythingisokay I am currently on the NHS waiting list to be seen and not sure if they’ll offer IVF or not. I was hoping things would happen naturally but as time goes on, I get more nervous and doubtful. But hearing from others has certainly helped me so thank you all again xxx

Hi
I conceived at 38 after a long time trying, but sadly had to TFMR at 14 weeks for T18 (Edwards Syndrome). Rather unbelievably, we did conceive again after another 4 months and baby was due on my 40th birthday. He was born healthy, although I found it hard to believe it would actually happen.

What I would say, I think things happened for us when we started trying earlier in my cycle, not just once I got the LH surge. Have you read 'Sperm meets Egg'? It was free on the kindle app (free on your phone, don't need a kindle).

Edited

Thank you so much. I’m very nervous, just taking it one day at a time 🤞xx

40 fell pregnant ‘accidentally’ as just off the pill ended in miscarriage
tried again a few months later and fell pregnant second month of trying …another miscarriage
I was referred to the miscarriage unit and they found I have APS so nothing to do with my age.
i would push to have all the tests possible by the recurrent miscarriage unit.
i was put on the correct meds,
im 42 and expecting my baby in the next few weeks.
it took me 2 months to conceive her.
i also have severe stage 4 endo which is everywhere but for whatever reason didn’t effect my fertility x

Olika · 16/07/2025 18:55

We TTC almost 3 years before finally having a healthy pregnancy and I was already 40 when I got pregnant and 41 when I gave birth. I started taking Proceive Max, Ubiquinol and agnus castus (cd1-14) 1.5 months before we finally succeeded. Of course I do t know if they made a difference but I think so after almost 3 years being unsuccessful.

Thank you for sharing, and sorry to hear about your first pregnancy. I haven't heard of that book but will def look it up! xx

oh, thanks for sharing that, I have only been to EPU to have my two D&C's and I have never been referred to recurrent miscarriage unit, and never had any tests. Since having the chemical pregnancy, I believe my referral is now with gynae at the hospital but I am going to check up on all of this. Wishing you all the best! xxx

I have just had my little girl she is 6 weeks old and I'm soon to be 42

mummytrex · 18/07/2025 00:21

I had my daughter at 41 and my son at 45 earlier this year. Both were ivf (I just can't conceive naturally for various reasons). I'd really recommend "it starts with the egg" by Rebecca Fett. Sets out supplements and suggested lifestyle change. I didn't implement everything but some of the suggestions in hindsight make a lot of sense.

mummytrex · 18/07/2025 00:26

I'd add that these successes followed 8 yrs of trying naturally (1 loss at 5 months 7 yrs in followed by a ruptured ectopic). Then a further miscarriage on 1st round of ivf.
