F as im a FTM with baby due middle of November!

Hope you get some answers soon x

Don't bother with tiny, you can roll the sleeves up on 0 or 1 month clothing. Mine was in 3-6 months by 1.5 months anyway. You can layer up so a few bigger things will go over the top nicely. Try to get crossover baby gros that open out completely rather than going over their head. It makes the first few weeks much less stressful! I kept mine in a sleeping bag a lot at first, it was much easier than socks and trousers, you don't need to tuck them up for a nap, and you can just unzip for skin to skin!

I’m due December too! I have been getting just 0-3 and not newborn/first size. It’s my second baby, and with my first I got wayyy too much in all the sizes. Hardly used the tiny sizes as he was chunky. So this time planning on using 0-3 and just rolling up sleeves. They grow so fast!!!

Ohdearwhatnow4 · 14/07/2025 09:59

My first was very long, 2nd chunky, 3rd below average and 4th small. They all needed different sizes.
Personally if I would need to prepare again I would get 0-3 and 3-6, as your need these anyway and then 1 set of newborn and then order more if I need. With actually clothing not body/sleepsuits I would get 0-3 as you can roll sleeves/legs up. My winter babies had bodysuit, baby grow and cardis on most of the time, but some people like dressing their babies in clothes.

I wouldn’t buy too much at this point and wait and see what size your baby is. I bought a lot second hand for my first baby and just picked things up as I saw them, because I was only buying second hand it limited the amount of stuff I ended up with. My first child wasn’t a sicky baby, and we never had nappy leaks so one baby grow would do a whole day no problem at all. Whereas I had friends who were going through 4 outfits changes a day.
my second child was a long baby so we couldn’t use any newborn or 1m sized clothes, and went straight to 0-3m ….it didn’t matter as she’s wearing her older sisters clothes but would have been a total waste of money if I’d bought any new newborn clothes.

it will also vary on how often you do a washing, and where you like to get the clothes from. If you run out or decide you need more then almost anything can be bought from the supermarket or ordered next day.

another thing I found for the first 6 months I only used baby grows, vest and leggings…I didn’t put mine in “outfits” at all because it was just too much faff, but again I know lots of people like outfits.

I definitely would avoid newborn sizes as they really dont last long (unless you know closer to the time that your baby is expected to be quite small). There's an 'Up to 1 month' size that I found ideal, its usually up to about 10 pounds. Mine was 7.5 pounds and newborn is usually up to 7.5 pounds, so pointless really. Newborns are most comfortable in vests and babygrows. Outfits bunch up and dont seem comfy. Id start with 10-15 vests and 10-15 baby grows. Long sleeve vests might be necessary in December if you have a cold house. Hats and warm cardigans for outdoors too, maybe 2 of each. Then depending on your babys size you could build on that. You'll use 0-3 months regardless, so have a stash of 10 of each vests and babygrows in that size too.

namestealer · 14/07/2025 11:31

I agree with avoiding newborn/tiny - both mine grew out of those after less than 2 weeks (only had a few second hand - most of their clothes were 0-3) - but both DH and I are the taller side of average so we planned for bigger babies.
Tbh, I'd buy a load of vests, and loads of sleepsuits and then see what you think when baby arrives. Plus a pramsuit. And a cute Christmas outfit 😆

Summersun91 · 14/07/2025 11:32

Going against what other people have said here - my baby was 7lb 7oz when born (so around average) but Newborn clothes were too big for her so we actually went out and bought 3 Tiny Baby babygros for the first 2 weeks. I don’t know her height when she was born but she’s around 85th percentile now so suspect she wasn’t Tiny in height either!
So I’d get a few Newborn in but not many, with the knowledge you can buy more if needed.

Rituals1 · 14/07/2025 11:34

I would actually buy a few newborn sleepsuits for the first week or so, you can pick them up cheap. Don’t buy tiny baby unless you’re told you are having one! My baby mainly wore vests and sleepsuits for the first 10 weeks, it’s hard to dress a newborn. You will probably need a pramsuit and a hat if you are taking baby on walks. Plenty of blankets and cot sheets!

rosydreams · 14/07/2025 11:38

just get 0-3 they maybe baggy but babies grow so quick it does not matter.Lets see a baby needs one more layer than you. A new baby only really needs to be wearing vest/sleepsuits with a few day outfits. You hardly use day outfits more so to look cute for photos or relatives .So get a bunch of vests/sleepsuits and a snowsuit to keep warm outside plus hat .With one festive outfit for their Christmas photo .

so

hats
snowsuit
plenty vests
plenty sleepsuits
a handful of cute outfits like vest dress/tights or vest,t shirt dungarees

DappledThings · 14/07/2025 11:41

I didn't buy any newborn size and had to stop at Sainsbury's on the way home in a daze to get some. The 0-3 month stuff drowned him.

I've had December and February babies. I would get a few long sleeved bodysuits and onesies and 3-4 cardigans. I would also get a few pairs of easy slip on dungarees because I find the poppers on sleepsuits a pain in the arse but lots of people prefer them.

A fleecy pramsuit, plenty of blankets and a couple of hats.

Bitzee · 14/07/2025 11:46

I don’t think an average sized baby is likely to need tiny so I wouldn’t buy unless you’re likely to deliver early and/or scan suggest a small baby- if needs be you can get it pretty quickly in a supermarket or on amazon. Most babies but will wear newborn for at least a few weeks so get a bit of that especially long sleeved vests and sleepsuits. 0-3 you can go nuts with as they’ll definitely need that. And you could likely get away with sizing up stuff like cardigans and the pram suit to 0-3 and rolling up the sleeves if it’s initially too big.

Rituals1 · 14/07/2025 12:01

My baby did need tiny baby for a month or so but he was only 5lb 10oz so very small, he went into newborn sizes around 7lbs.
