Brushing teeth 🤢

I’ve had trouble brushing my teeth since 8 weeks and 25 now. It’s got to the point that I’m sick as soon as the toothbrush enters my mouth! It’s awful! It’s like my brain just does it automatically. Has anyone had this and had any other way of keeping on top of teeth cleaning? TMI but I know that as soon as I’m brushing my teeth they’re also being met with stomach acid (sorry, know, yuck). I’m not sick at anything else, I’ve mostly had dry heaving all the way.

If you can tolerate your finger in your mouth you could try a finger brush. Grim, isn't it? x

minnieot · 11/07/2025 17:04

I had this all throughout my pregnancy until I gave birth, I often just used mouthwash if I could or used my finger with toothpaste x

This post has given me a very nasty flashback.
You have my sympathies.

Chew lots of gum with xylitol in the morning instead?

TryingToStayAwake88 · 11/07/2025 17:08

I did this with my twins pregnancy. I remember the odd time I had to clean my teeth (was during the end of covid so most days I didn't leave the house as I was wfh) and I ended up vomiting. It was horrible and I resorted to chewing gum a few times just to make me feel a bit less smelly.

Upinthetreetops · 11/07/2025 17:09

Another one getting flashbacks of this now that you mention it! Its awful isnt it😞 A dental hygienist told me to focus on tapping my feet as it can help stop the gagging. It sort of helped, sometimes anyway. A good mouthwash is better than nothing I would guess but I know not ideal.

BeTealShark · 11/07/2025 17:14

No, I never had this despite bad nausea. You poor thing. What about a sonic tooth thingy? Or even though chewable toothbrush gum things you get at the services, in the vending machines. Combine it with a water flosser? Lots on Prime at the moment for prime day

You have to be careful with your teeth while pregnant but you also have to balance it against the damage you'll be doing from the acid of you vomit.

BeTealShark · 11/07/2025 17:16

And be really careful about what you're eating to avoid sugars

Seeline · 11/07/2025 17:22

I still gag every time and my 'baby' is nearly 24! I was fine before really bad 24/7 pregnancy sickness.

BeamMeUpCountMeIn · 11/07/2025 17:27

Flashbacks here too. Bless you, it's utterly wretched isn't it.

I managed to brush by imagining I was licking an iceberg. Yes, that sounds mental. But the icy freshness and colour in my mind seemed to help my brain focus for just long enough to have a half decent clean.

An HG pregnancy was the only time my teeth ever needed a bit of a clean at the dentists. All OK once pregnancy was over though.

Tinytigertail · 11/07/2025 17:38

You have unlocked pregnancy memories for me! Apparently, strawberries rubbed on the teeth and gums help to keep them clean.

CinnamonBuns67 · 11/07/2025 17:58

I puked nearly every time I brushed my teeth from about 6 week to 18 week with my daughter, and on bus travel. Hope it subsides quickly OP.

DisforDarkChocolate · 11/07/2025 17:59

Oh this was hell.

My dentist suggested a lower foam toothpaste and a softer brush. They helped a little.

I have so much sympathy.

RobinHeartella · 11/07/2025 18:01

I had this and my teeth got a bit of decay for the first time in my life. I didnt get a reliable solution but I gagged way less when using toothpaste tablets, they're like chewable bicarb of soda tablets. I got them from Lush but other brands do them. Not generally a lush fan apart from those

RobinHeartella · 11/07/2025 18:03

I also had nausea throughout and even postpartum like a pp. It did get more bearable in my third trimester but then pgp kicked in.

I always get enraged when people say snippily that "pregnancy is not an illness"

Marmite1992 · 11/07/2025 18:31

Dentist here, you have my sympathies!! I am exactly the same and 34 weeks now. I use Corsdyl mouthwash in the morning and brush only at night. I try to think about anything else whilst brushing but have to accept can't always do the full 2 minutes. As a dentist it's killing me 😂 if you are sick make sure to rinse with water afterwards to avoid acid erosion as much as possible

Utterlyconfusednow · 11/07/2025 18:33

Swishing with a quality coconut oil will keep your teeth healthy while you’re struggling. Make sure not to swallow it and floss every day.

Cocomandarin · 12/07/2025 09:03

Thank you everyone for your sympathetic replies! I don’t feel so weird 😂

definitely going to try the finger brush and corsadyl.

i hope i still have teeth by the time baby comes 😅

Awful isn’t it 😫 poor you.
I ended up using a cheap baby (0-2yrs) toothbrush with a tiny brush head, small amount of toothpaste and just try and distract myself when brushing as fast as I could lol. It did help.
All the best.

JMassey · 14/07/2025 11:07

I'm 28 weeks and exactly the same! I find i can't brush them when I immediately wake up which i would normally do, at weekends its much easier when i can brush them a bit later in the morning i seem to cope much better, no idea why think my stomach is just sensitive first thing. I have a 2nd set of everything in my drawer at work for those mornings i cant face it! I have to be in the office for 7am so i don't have much time in the morning it's easier to do them when i'm here and have come round a bit!

Cocomandarin · 14/07/2025 13:24

@JMassey its so hard! Pregnancy is hard but you can’t even have clean teeth 😂 my husband asked me if I had considered a tongue scraper and that made me heave just the thought of it 🤢 mornings are definitely worse
