Severe sickness

Hi looking for some advice in regards to severe nausea and vomiting in the first trimester. I’m around 8 weeks and suffering really bad. First thing in the morning I’m throwing up what feels like a hundred times and it’s just bile or me gagging. Then throughout the day and nighttime no matter what medication I take I still seem to be throwing up 20x plus, especially after I’ve just had something to eat and because of this it’s leaving me with no energy and such a raw/sore throat.

I’ve found myself waking in the night and having to grab the bin or run for the bathroom.

I can’t stomach any liquid, as soon as that touches the back of my throat it makes me gag.

has anyone else suffered like this before or have any recommendations on how to ease the nausea and help the raw throat which hurts to swallow.

Sounds like it could be HG. Do you have anti sickness medication from the GP? If you do and that's not touching it, keep an eye on your fluid intake. Super important if you can't keep fluids and food down that you let a medical professional know because you might need to go to hospital to get hydrated xx

You need meds so see the GP. In this heat you will be at risk of dehydration so you need to be seen.

Ugh, poor you. I've been there its horrible. The only thing that helped me was prescription caraban tablets (I think they have a different name in the UK), so definitely go see you GP. I've done two pregnancies with that level of morning sickness, one without the tablets and one with, definitely try to get medication! Try to take tiny little sips of water if possible or maybe an ice pop. The only food I was able to tolerate was fast food (Mc Donald's, burger king), so maybe that's worth a try, or maybe thay was just me.

Try get prescribed xonvea. I’m 20 weeks but been taking them since 9 weeks as I had extreme sickness and no other meds helped. Still have to take them now sickness comes back as soon as I try to stop!!

Go to your GP. They can inject an anti emetic (it isn't pleasant) but it will sort it out long enough to get on top of oral anti emetics.

I spent months vomiting because I was worried GP wouldn't take me seriously. They signed me off work for a week as well to get it under control.

In the mean time eat food you can stomach (no pun intended) bringing back up again.

I’m sorry you’re suffering OP, it’s debilitating. You’re not alone, lots of women suffer with super extreme sickness and nausea and there is help available.

There’s a charity called pregnancy sickness support who run a helpline and can send you information about anti-sickness medications to try. There are lots of options and they often work best in combination. Unfortunately many GPs are dismissive of how severe hyperemesis can be, so unless you get lucky and have a good doctor, you may have to really push to get what you need. Pregnancy sickness support can help give you advice about this if you encounter it.

I’d try and make an appointment with your GP tomorrow and get some anti-emetics ahead of the weekend. If you’re struggling to keep any liquid down you may need urgent help in hospital - with my first I was admitted to hospital several times for drips because I was severely dehydrated. In this heat don’t delay seeking help if you’re getting dehydrated, you could get very unwell.

I found ice cold drinks easier to manage in small sips than anything warm or room temperature. Some women find lemonade or coke better than water. Some find eating ice or ice lollies is easiest. Whatever you can manage - eat or drink that even if it’s total junk - in my first pregnancy all I could eat was jelly snakes and plain crisps and the baby was totally fine.

edit to add - also, get signed off work if you need to. Work will manage and rest is so important to help your body cope.

I had this. I ended up in hospital because I didn’t get help quickly enough.

Nchangeo · 10/07/2025 21:16

Yes Xonvea. Don’t let them fob you off with trials of anything else. Say no I am not leaving without Xonvea.

Goodluck

Hi thank you all so much for the help. Unfortunately I did end up in hospital with severe dehydration etc and have only just been discharged. I live in Scotland so xonvea isn’t routinely prescribed here, but I’m going to keep at my gp and hope there is something that will help.

So sorry to hear you had to be admitted. I hope it has helped you feel a bit more human again and hopefully offered a bit of a reset for a while. Xonvea wasn’t available in my first pregnancy, but I found ondansetron helped so maybe push for that if you aren’t going to be able to get xonvea. You could also see if pregnancy sickness support have any info about getting xonvea in Scotland.
