Is it possible to have a normal pregnancy after a HG pregnancy?

“Normal” might not be the correct wording but - I had horrendous sickness with DC1 and were considering DC2 soon and I’m quite terrified of getting pregnant again due to HG.

I may have been lucky, but pregnancy with DD1 was a nightmare, including 5 weeks in bed unable to move without vomiting (in the days before there were any safe drugs), but pregnancy with DD2 was a breeze. No actual vomiting and only one wave of nausea the entire time.

I’m praying this is me! Honestly relate to the laying in bed scared to move for weeks because of sickness. I had to tell my boss at 5 weeks because of it. Awful

thank for you hope xx

I had hyperemesis with my daughter in 2020 particularly in the first and third trimesters.
Last year I had two miscarriages with hyperemesis and conceived again a few weeks after the last miscarriage and have had barely any sickness by comparison to normal for me. I didn't even find out I was pregnant until 7.5 weeks by which point I'm usually chained to the toilet/sofa. I had xonvea on prescription from 8 to 11 weeks which took the sickness to nothing and I need to use it occasionally since going into the third trimester. It's completely different to my other pregnancies.

Sorry for your losses, I’ve also experienced HG in pregnancies that end in loss and it is really heartbreaking to go through severe sickness to then also lose your baby

I have one DC but he is pregnancy number 3. All 3 were HG

I have had HG in all three pregnancies however less severe each time. Although sadly the last one milder symptoms lasted the entire pregnancy to some degree whereas they were completely gone by about 24 weeks in the earlier two. So it was a bit swings and roundabouts. I think it was because of getting treated as soon as I had that positive test with the other two pregnancies helped me not end up quite as unwell. I only went to hospital in my first pregnancy. Xonvea was the best medicine I ever tried but only tried that in my third. I had no side effects, the mildest symptoms, and so no need to take second line meds in that pregnancy.

Yes!
I had HG with DC1.
Ended up hospitalised 6 times, being pumped full of intravenous anti-emetics and fluids because I literally couldn’t keep anything down. I was so poorly, and it went on right up until DC1 was born - I was still puking in labour 🫣
I found out I was pregnant with DC2 only 8 months later, and I remember just sobbing because there’s no way I could go through all of that again when I had such a small baby already.
It turned out I had some pretty horrendous sickness until about 14/15 weeks with DC2, but then it gradually tapered off into nothing. Same with DC3.
Don’t get me wrong, I felt awful and the vomiting was quite frequent second and third time around, but I spent more time feeling sick than actually vomiting, which was a complete contrast to DC1.
Also with DC2 and DC3, the second I felt even slightly nauseous, I went to the GP and asked for anti-emetics. Given my history, he didn’t even hesitate to prescribe them, and as long as I stayed on top of taking them religiously, they seemed to do their job for the most part - although sometimes if I was slightly late in taking it, and the nausea had already set in, I did vomit the pill back up on a few occasions.

Curreny pregnant wirh my 2nd.
I had Hyperemesis is my first pregnancy and unfortunately I have it this time around.
Only this time its been worse and Ive had hospital admissions for fluids!
Only thing that has helped is Xonvea which is like the wonder drug. Im barely sick now and im too scared to stop the medication to see if the sickness has gone or if the meds are just amazing!

Dandelionsand4leafclover · 09/07/2025 06:07

Sadly I had it quite bad with both mine. I was in hospital a few times for fluids. It was obviously harder the 2nd time with having a toddler to care for.

NotrialNodeal · 09/07/2025 06:11

I had hyperemesis with all three till about 30 weeks. I know some people don't get it second time around but I think it's quite common to get it again if you see what I mean.

I had HG in my first pregnancy, hospitalised and developed preeclampsia at 30 weeks. I spend 8 weeks in hospital before birth, then a few weeks after birth in neonatal as she was born very small it was awful 😅.

But my second i had zero symptoms at all! I was convinced something was wrong! He was born a whopper 😂

As they are growing up, they are also opposite in every single way.
