Aspirin and Dalteparin/heparin

Hi, I am 27 weeks pregnant and have been taking 150mg a day of aspirin and a daily injection of Dalteparin (aka heparin) since the start. I didn’t have much time to take all the info on board when I fell pregnant as it was a surprise (we had three rounds of IVF and were awaiting a transfer when I fell pregnant naturally) and so was put on the medication immediately (I’m 41, have a blood clotting disorder). I’ve started to get really worried about this medication and whether it might have long term neurological impacts- I see there is a study whereby is can increase risk of cerebral palsy. I’m cynical of medicine due to my lack of knowledge and had a first, natural and healthy pregnancy with no medication, so i am worried about any unintended side effects of this medication on my baby. Anyone who has taken it and now has slightly older children- has everything been ok for you? Any adverse effects? Thanks in advance x

I’ve taken clexane and aspirin throughout 2 pregnancies due to a blood clotting disorder. Kids are now 4 and 18months and no issues that were aware of. They’re both a little wild and feral but not sure I can blame the meds 😄. I wasn’t made aware of any risks at the time and just told both were safe in pregnancy. I’ve lost pregnancies when I wasn’t taking the medication so to me on balance the risk is worth it.

Hey I’m 41 and have been taking the same meds as you since week 5 of being pregnant.
after consecutive miscarriages docs discovered I had antipholodipid (can’t spell it) syndrome resulting in my previous loses.
Only qualified doctors and amazing medicine has made my pregnancy possible (33 weeks now)
I totally trust the doctors as without their help I wouldn’t become a mum.

Dalteparin is routinely used in pregnancy and doesn’t cross the placenta. Some preparations have a preservative that can cause problems in neonates/infants. Those preparations aren’t used routinely in pregnancy. The risks of any medication have to be weighed up against the risks of not taking a medication when it’s needed (rather than not taking it because it’s not necessary).

@Fizxy very good to know, thank you! My son is pretty wild and feral too and I wasn’t on medication for him so definitely can’t be blamed on that!
