Thankyou so much I feel very reassured hearing that so many have taken it and their babies didn’t have cleft lip / palate it’s been worrying me so much at least now I don’t have the guilt as well as I was feeling bad for taking it so early on.
This is just the worst thing I’ve ever experienced I’ve had sickness bugs before but it’s actually worse than that sort of sickness it’s really shocked me how bad it is .

It is totally shocking how awful it is. I could never have understood until I got it. It’s okay to have grief over the pregnancy you thought you’d have and the reality of an HG pregnancy. It’s just survival, but you can do it and you will be okay, just take one day at a time and get as much support as you can. I’d echo those who have said to reach out to Pregnancy Sickness Support - their peer support programme is super helpful, particularly when you’re right in the trenches like you are now.

How’re you doing today? Remember it’ll take a few days for the ondansetron to take more effect. Also you’re so early in your pregnancy it’s the worst time. Up to 12 weeks is really the worst and the meds will be even more helpful once you get to that point.

Not feeling great only managed to sip water and coke today just couldn’t eat at all as much because of feeling so sick as well as exhausted and just don’t have the energy to eat and have slept a lot.

I know you feel bad but that actually sounds like a slight improvement! I look back and actually I survived on just sips of water, cola, and the odd beige substance for so long it just feels like another planet I was on.

I know it seems crazy but don’t worry about eating lots just yet. Fluids are most important and the coke will give you a bit of sugar in your body. Have you tried lucozade? Some women prefer it. Also you can try a salted peanut or two. Tint bites of really beige food like cracker or crisp or bite of toast.

you’ve done another day, well done for surviving what is basically like living on a boat with permanent sea sickness. But you will be able to get off the boat just not as soon as we would like!

hyperemesishelp · 04/07/2025 20:00

It’s strange as I don’t even really feel hungry or thirsty at all but I know I need to get fluids in. I might give lucozade a try as I keep getting so shivery and shaky I think maybe it’s my blood sugar ? I’m hoping the xonvea kicks in soon apparently it takes a week or so and I started last night I’m desperate for it to work

And another positive to focus on is that you’ve been able to sleep, getting sleep is good to rest as otherwise your sickness could keep you up more. Yes a week is a long time but it will fly by quicker if you sleep!

your body is also super focused on conserving energy so it probably also doesn’t want you to feel too hungry as it knows if you eat too much you’ll vomit. And also it maybe doesn’t have the energy to process all the food anyway. Fluids and a bit of sugar in fluids will really help and small sips. Because it’s no fun chucking up just fluids either!

heatherwithapee · 04/07/2025 20:13

Yes. I took it with two pregnancies. My children are now teenagers and are both fine.

If you find it’s not working and you’ve been prescribed the tablets, see if there is any possibility of IV or IM ondansetron instead, for a couple of days until the vomiting / nausea stops. That was the turning point for me (I was vomiting 20+ times a day so the tablets weren’t staying in long enough to work). Once I’d had a couple of days of it in a drip / jab, I could switch to the tablets.

On Facebook there is a group called “Hyperemesis gravidarum and pregnancy sickness (UK group)” which I found really useful and supportive. You can post anonymously too if you prefer but it’s got a good policy on privacy.

Thankyou I’ve applied to join. I also tried some sips of lucozade and it’s stopped me shaking so I think my blood sugar was maybe a bit low and it did help Thankyou so much for the suggestion

I took it through my pregnancy. My DS is perfectly healthy and thriving.

I had HG for my full pregnancy. I honestly considered termination and suicide it was that bad. I kept focusing on the end goal, knowing I would have my little baby at the end of it and knowing that the sickness wasn’t forever.

Every day was a struggle but stick with the meds and if they font help go back to your gp. My sickness was so bad I had to take a combination of different pills to keep on top of it.

sendibg you lots of strength x

Hocuspocustoasty · 05/07/2025 19:35

Glad the lucozade helped and hopefully the FB group does too. As previous posters have said, you are not alone it’s an awful condition. But you’ve done another day today so be proud of that! One day at a time 🙌

hyperemesishelp · 05/07/2025 20:55

Today was better mostly because the xonvea made me sleep for the majority of it ! Still only managed sips of liquids again but since starting on lucozade I feel so much better i had thought my shivering and shaking was due to extreme nausea but it’s gone now so was definitely blood sugar related
