Pregnancy Swelling

Hi all, 34 weeks pregnant and with the start of the UK heat came puffy feet and ankles!

At first they went away overnight, however over the past few days they’ve got significantly worse and they aren’t getting much better even when resting or after a good nights sleep.

Had my midwife appointment on Tuesday where she had to retake my BP 3 times as my diastolic number wouldn’t go below 90 until the final time where it fell to 88. No protein in my urine at that time.

I’m starting to get worried and whilst having no other symptoms, it’s getting painful to walk with how swollen my feet have become.

First time mom so not sure if it’s over the top to contact triage or shall I wait until my 36 week midwife appointment in just under 2 weeks time?

Since you say it's become worse, and that it's causing you a lot of discomfort, I'd be seeking medical advice today, OP. Whether that's calling the midwife or triage (sorry, not in the UK, but I'd be popping in to my gynaecologist's office immediately with those symptoms). Can't be too careful with swelling, BP, pre eclampsia etc.

Let us know what they say!

My midwife says to me at every appointment that I should contact them if I get any swelling that doesn’t go down overnight/ after resting for a while etc. So if I were you I would contact your midwife and explain, especially if it’s causing you pain when walking.

I wouldn't let them brush it off. Your BP became borderline after 3 times checking it. They should have asked you to come back again the next day at least to re-check it. I had severe pre-eclampsia in my first pregnancy and they ignored every symptom I had. I complained of swelling, flashing in my vision, right sided abdomen pain etc but as I had no protein in my urine and my BP at that time was normal they ignored it. Then at a routine appointment at 36 weeks my BP was suddenly through the roof at 210/110. I was immediately induced and I ended up in high dependency. I was on the verge of developing eclampsia and my liver began failing.

This was over 5 years ago and I am still so angry that they dismissed me so much. All of that could have been avoided if they had listened to me and done further testing. I dread to think what could have happened if it wasn't caught that day. Please advocate for yourself. You know your body better than anyone else.

Phone triage as it’s worse/different since last review

Thanks all for your advice! I did go in the end, after calling and explaining my concerns they said it was better to get checked out again.

Good news is my blood pressure was fine, I did have protein in my urine though but other markers suggest it may be an infection so with some further testing, I should find out tomorrow.

Thanks for encouraging me to get checked out, it was much easier than I expected and feel more content knowing they’ve double checked me. Got another appointment for monitoring next week in between my midwife appointments
