Waters breaking or Watery Discharge

I’m 37+4 weeks pregnant with my first. Yesterday I woke up with wet underwear, thought nothing of it. I then had to change my underwear at around 3 in the afternoon because I was wet again. I phoned my assessment unit for advice and they told me to put a pad on lie down for 30 minutes and check again. I did this and leaked, when I stood up and checked my pad I watched a few trickles of clear fluid leak onto the pad. Went in and got checked and told it’s not my waters.
However I’m still leaking, I can see white watery discharge sat on top of the pad as well as liquid which has soaked in.

Has anyone else experienced this before and is it normal? I understand it’s not my waters and that discharge can become very watery especially at the end of pregnancy but I didn’t expect discharge to trickle out like a tap.

Go back and get them to check again

Have a sniff. Amniotic fluid has an unusual chemical smell.

It doesn’t sound like normal discharge. I would call them back so they can check again. This happened to my friend, she was leaking constantly for 24h and they only believed her the 3rd time they checked and by then her baby was in distress (all ok in the end but could have not been)

I agree you need to go back and get checked again.

When my waters went whenever I stood up after being sat or lay down I leaked.
It doesn't hurt to be asked to be checked again.

It doesn’t sound normal, I’d go back and ask to be checked again.

I didn’t experience that kind of discharge in any of my pregnancies and I don’t remember anyone else talking about it either. That doesn’t mean it’s not ok but best to be safe I think.

In my first pregnancy my waters broke just before I went into labour and it was a huge gush and very obvious.

I had something similar happen but I was 30 weeks. Went in and was checked and told it wasn’t my waters. Decided to do a scan as I was due one because of a low lying placenta, was then to leave. Went for scan and was told baby was breach and I wasn’t going any where as I had no waters left.

I’d ask for another check.

You need to go and insist to get you checked. This happened to me and I was put on monitoring twice a week. Also baby checked regularly.
Everything was normal but once your waters break you're venerable to infections thats why they will have extra measures to protect you and baby.
Other than that everything was fine but ended up being induced at the end so to not risk baby.

Actually before the twice week checking, I think I stayed at the hospital for 3 nights then I was discharged after they made sure all is good.

ThatBlueBiscuit · 03/07/2025 10:29

Be firm. I had this, went in twice to be told they hadn't gone (although I knew they had). When I went into labour 2 weeks later they said of course they'd already gone and I also ended up with sepsis and other complications.

Update- thank you all. I rang again and went in, the midwife was very different to the last and explained everything, she showed me the negative test and explained it could have been urine or watery discharge which can seem just like water especially in the heat. I don’t seem to be having anymore leaking so sounds like a false alarm but glad I got a second opinion!

I'm glad you have gone some clarity and reassurance. Some times it's the explanation rather than the conclusion you need.
