Hi all! When's the best time to have a scan? Wanting to go for a private scans before the 12 week one. I want to not jusf see a blob! I'm currently around 5+3. Didn't have one with my first before the 12 weeks but feel like I'm missing out!

I’d wait til there was something to see, which would be well after 12 weeks. In fact I’d wait til much later, say get a 3D one around week 30?

Pomegranatemum · 26/06/2025 22:03

Definitely still a bean around 8 weeks, so you could try around 10 weeks?

Proudmummy67 · 26/06/2025 22:04

I had one at 8 weeks and was measuring a couple of days behind once I had the scan. But you could make out a head a little arm and leg stumps and see the heart beating.

Pinkdreams · 26/06/2025 22:04

I’d wait until 12 weeks but book a private one at 16 if you want to know gender and don’t want to wait until 20 on NhS one

I went at 8 weeks and you could see baby shape starting to form and wiggle. Still all out of proportion but could definitely see a little body shape.

Thanks but definitely want one before 12 weeks. We go away with family at almost 11 weeks so would want to tell them but want something to show, too. Will be having a 3d later as we did with our first too!

Thanks @@Pomegranatemum@Proudmummy67@Timeforyetanothernamechange I think I'll opt for 10 weeks! That will be just before we go on holiday 😊

I waited until 10 weeks and it was perfect! plus only a couple weeks wait until nhs scan to see baby again

Chocolateeggsarebetterthannormalchocolate · 27/06/2025 06:42

@cherrybl0ssom5oh yes, that will be nice! I'm definitely going to have more scans this time around!

Wait until 8 weeks at the earliest. Most miscarriages happen between 6 and 8 weeks, so one before then can offer false reassurance. Although you still can’t see much at 8 weeks so if that’s what you’re hoping for I’d hold out until 12. Congratulations :)

strawberrylaces12 · 27/06/2025 07:19

We had one at 10 weeks and he already looked like a proper little baby, saw him moving around, hiccupping and waving even. I think usually from 8 or 9 weeks they look more baby like. I had one at 7 weeks as part of the IVF process and he looked like a jellybean at that point 😂

WaltzingWaters · 27/06/2025 07:30

I would wait until 8 weeks, as by then unless your dates are really out you should definitely see a heartbeat. Before then, you do risk not seeing one which causes worry.

I’ve had one with all three of my pregnancies. The first showed no heartbeat. As awful and upsetting as that was, I’m glad I found out then and not at the 12 week scan. I had to go back 2 weeks later to make sure as I wasn’t sure at all on my dates (surprise pregnancy and irregular periods) but I’m glad that I did know it probably wasn’t viable, as it would have been much harder finding out at 12 weeks.

With my DS and current pregnancy I needed to check at that 8 week mark to make sure there was a little flickering heart, and the relief (albeit still knowing that wasn’t a certainty of it staying that way of course), was certainly needed for me. The baby is still a bit of a blob with a heartbeat at that point, there are little leg blobs, and really tiny arm blobs, but for me it was the reassurance I needed. Waiting until closer to 10 weeks, the baby will look more “baby like”.

Will book for 10 weeks, or the end of 9, thanks!

I have had tons of early scans (due to issues). The one at 10+3 had what looked like a baby, kicking and waving arms around etc. which was lovely to see

Timeforyetanothernamechange · 27/06/2025 14:05

Just to give you an idea, this was my private 8 week scan. You can see the little limbs and they were wriggling about. My NHS scan turned out to be 14+1 and the difference was remarkable in that very short time.

Due to my medical history we have had multiple scans on the nhs

out first one was at 6 weeks, then 11 weeks, 13 weeks, 20 weeks, 29 weeks, 31 weeks and I have another one next month around 36 weeks and then hopefully I’m done.

if you are worried I recommend getting an early viability scan as this will let you know where you stand x
