Hi all first time mum looking for some advice ….
formula fed baby 1 month he was 6 pounds 1 when born and now 8 pounds 4 so he is doing realiy well but the first feed of the night he will go 3/4 hours, the rest of the feeds are 2 hours/2 half hours max….Deffo hungry as shows signs but I can just not sleep in any other window than the first one due to how loud he is he makes like a straining grunting noise so loud then sometimes even wakes himself up !
I do try to spend a long time winding him and seems to burp but the minutes he’s going down you can tell he has wind (eyes rolling etc)
He does go for a poo every other day and does not have any hard stools or anything, all normal there.
Am I doing anything wrong or missing something?

thank you

It sounds like you're doing great! One month old is still early day and it does take a while to get used to babies 'active sleep'. I was a little concerned about significant straining (also not constipated) with one of my children and the health visitor said that it takes them a surprising amount of time to learn to use their bum properly (can't quite remember how she worded it). So it's possible the baby will grow out of the night straining.

You could try things like gripe water in the feeds in the evening and night and also make sure you're slowing them down as much as possible. That would be keeping them as up right as possible and taking an extra couple of burping breaks during the feed after the four hour stretch. They might be gulping down more air than usual because they've gone so long between feeds.

Thank you for taking the time to respond! I have been using Infacol and since that he brings up burps well it just seemed very strange to me for that first feed he’s so settled and throughout the day he will sleep really quiet but then the middle of the night is crazy 🤣!
thank you xx

Oh my son was so loud when he slept at night during the first several weeks. I slept with ear plugs in, the foam ones so they didn’t block him out, just dulled sounds. I mostly wear them for periods when DH snored.

I would say as well, he was bottle fed and had reflux. So I would hold him upright for 50 minutes after each bottle and make sure he would burp before putting him down. He would still be a noisy sleeper at night time. The reflux didn’t disappear for the whole year but he did eventually become a quiet sleeper. I can’t remember when because it was two years ago, maybe after 2 months? Oh he also had a bottle every 2-2.5hrs hours as well, so it made for very little sleep in the early weeks.

You eventually get used to the loud active sleep, that when they stop you then spend the next several weeks waking up to check on them.

I didn’t know that not all babies are loud. I have just had my DD, she is 10 weeks old, and a fairly quiet sleeper since birth. She is noisy for the first 5 minutes of putting her down but then silence, I still vividly remember my son’s active sleep sounds.

Good luck, you are doing great.

Oh and I didn’t escape the lack of sleep stage with DD, she is a fairly quiet sleeper (unless congested), with no reflux, however it takes ages putting her down. The first 4 weeks she refused to go into the Moses/next2me and would only be held. Now she accepts it but it takes me 40-60 minutes to put her down and sometimes unsuccessful. So even without the active noise and reflux this time I still didn’t get longer sleep durations. I’m just making the most of cuddles this time rather than being sad about the lack of sleep, she’s my last baby.
