First trimester - poor diet

Hi,
I am 11 weeks pregnant with my second child, i have son who is 4.
I had low papp a with my son meaning he was only 2.3kg when born as the placenta was insufficent.

Now with this current pregnancy, i am petrified the same thing may happen again. I am trying to eat well etc but my nausea is much more extreme meaning i am living on cheese sandwiches, dairly dunkers, odd bit of fruit here and there and eggs.

I am feeling deeply guilty that i am going to harm my baby...or another pregnancy wont go well. I am 41 and am pregnant after a recent miscarriage.

Would love peoples thoughts...

I wouldn't worry too much, there are people who live on crisps and haribo in the first trimester, along with others who can't eat at all. Assume you're taking a multivitamin with folic acid which will help.

Is your Papp a low again?

legoplaybook · 18/06/2025 20:11

So lots of protein, calcium and some vit c? Sounds alright to me.

pitterypattery00 · 18/06/2025 20:13

Have you had your iron levels checked? You may need a supplement.

CommissarySushi · 18/06/2025 20:25

I threw up literally everything I ate in the first trimester, including my prenatals and water. Lost 15 pounds, baby was fine though. They'll take what they need.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 18/06/2025 20:27

@CommissarySushi is right, @anon7683 - your baby will take what they need from you - please try not to worry (I know that is easy to say but a lot less easy to do).

JuneySunshine · 18/06/2025 21:44

Have you found out about your Papp A levels yet?

From what I know it's nothing you did that would have caused it so don't be feeling guilty about eating in a perfectly normal way for someone who is exhausted with cravings, aversion etc.

Also 70% of people that have low Papp A first time round won't have the same second time. That's been the case for me 😊

Alwaystired2023 · 18/06/2025 21:50

My first I had Papp A but my second I didn't. Diet terrible both times due to sickness, think no water only Diet Coke levels of terrible. Thankfully all was fine, pregnancy is tough!

I'm living on cereal at the moment. Meat smells terrible. I was told that the baby takes what it needs, it's just your the one suffering ATM. Have you tried cornflakes, it seems to settle my stomach and has B6 in it. Also dice half a lemon and squeeze it into water. Even if you can't sip it, smelling it weirdly settles me. But I know what you mean about the neasua. With me it's always there. I literally busted a capillary in my eye being so sick. On meds now to help.

I'm in the same position. The only fruit/veg I can eat is tomato. Other than that I eat bread. I'm having fruit juice to try and get some fruit in me, even though it's full of sugar! Can you get anti sickness meds?

I was told that as long as you keep water down, no. How many times are you sick throughout the day?

Wednesdayonline · 20/06/2025 15:52

@KuroKat4 my GP was happy to prescribe for me. Sick about 4/5 times a day. Main issue was 24/7 nausea and delightful dry heaving about 5 times an hour.

Lucky. I was prescribed mine yesterday and that was only because I was sick so much that I burst a capillary in my eye.

Wednesdayonline · 20/06/2025 15:56

@KuroKat4 I think it depends on your GP surgery, sadly. Mine was quite good about it. Although my PUQE score which scores how severe your morning sickness and nausea is was 14 out of 15, so despite not being sick all day long it was still debilitating for me and I couldn't leave bed. Dry heaving was the worst, it was constant.

This is my first pregnancy. No-one tells you how much it messes with your head, or how tired and sick you get.

Wednesdayonline · 20/06/2025 16:01

@KuroKat4 me too! I was so naive 😂 honestly didn't think I'd get that sick.

How far along are you? You thinking how on earth am I going to keep this thing alive?

Wednesdayonline · 20/06/2025 16:04

@KuroKat4 only 8 weeks :) what about you? Like op said not being able to eat healthily has been tough. I was eating soooo healthy TTC and then until 6 weeks, then last 2 weeks have been hell. Barely left the house

10 weeks today. I was eating healthy before being pregnant aswell. But now the smell of meat has me running. I think the first trimester is just survival mode, eat what you can. The heightened senses of smell is very weird right?

Wednesdayonline · 20/06/2025 16:08

@KuroKat4 my husband is showering about 3 times a day at the moment bless him, I just can't stand his smell🤣

That's funny.

Yeah so basically I had hyperemesis gravidium and could keep anything down for months and ended up on a drip. Baby was fine and is a healthy tall kid (born fine after miscarriages). Keep taking your vitamins. I was told by a number is consultants that the baby will take what it needs from your body.

Try not to worry. I know it’s hard after a miscarriage but one pregnancy to the next are very different and don’t mean the same things.

FictionalCharacter · 20/06/2025 16:23

Try not to worry. Your baby doesn’t get its nutrition from your food, it gets it from you. Your body tissues are literally dismantled as necessary to sustain the baby. There are even specialised cells in pregnancy that take calcium from your bones! Your food is used to repair your body, and if you don’t eat, the repairs have to wait.
I could eat very little in the first trimester because of sickness, and I lost weight. The midwife wasn’t too worried.

Bramblecrumb · 20/06/2025 16:26

I had hyperemesis in my pregnancy and lived on Chicago Town pizza and McDonald's - now have a healthy four month old who was 8lb3 at birth. My consultant was v unfused and said they can take what they need. I still feel quite depleted but baby is well! Check Pregnancy Sickness Support for any help with nausea. Try not to worry - I think I lost a stone during pregnancy and it was still fine
