Dressing baby coming home

This may seem like a daft question and I’m probably massively overthinking it, but in 30 degree heat, what should I take baby home from hospital in?

I have packed sleepsuits and vests, but surely that’ll be too hot? Do I need to pack a short romper or will I get told off by the midwives? Do I need a knitted blanket or a muslin swaddle?

I’m due in the next 10 days and doesn’t look like the temperature is going to come down! I’ve had it drummed into me that cold babies cry, warm babies die 😳

My DS runs hot now but when he was born he was on the smaller side so he struggled to maintain his body temp for the 1st few weeks. I would pack a few of everything so you are covered. You can always leave an extra bag in the car and only grab it if you need it.

I think a romper or a plain cotton sleepsuit is fine, it's breathable!
A vest or just a nappy is fine to sleep in on the hottest nights
You could look in the shops or vinted for linen vests/rompers which would be lovely.

30 Deg seems hot to us but babies have just come out of a 37 deg bath!

My daughter was August born in a heat wave and spent most of her first 2 days in vest and sleep suits. Once she was a few days old we had to reduce the layers.

Could be worth posting this question on the Aussie and New Zealand board. Anyone with a summer baby will be able to tell you!

Not a silly question at all. I would suggest a sleeveless 1 layer cotton 1 piece and try not to get the car too cold as coming from the outside heat. I had a canopy built into our car seat so the shade definitely helps x

Maybe a sleepsuit with no vest for carrying from the hospital to the car. Then as you’ll have the aircon on, put a blanket on baby, tucked in for the journey home. Online there are guides for in the house based on the temperature.

Thanks everyone 😊 put my mind at ease. I don’t really like the heat either so I’m suffering a lot this week, and it’s made my thoughts spiral a bit!

My dd was born in a heatwave and we still took her home in a short sleeve vest and sleepsuit. Once home she mainly wore just vests.

Ninkynonkpinkyponks · 18/06/2025 08:36

I would do a vest and then a blanket or muslin blanket on top. I had my baby in may and she spent most of hospital time in a vest

MuslinZmum · 25/06/2025 16:31

A sleepsuit - most hospitals insist you leave with a hat on - then a cellular blanket or a muslin over will do. Muslin is a good breathable, lightweight cover that will keep baby warm with out overheating.

stichguru · 25/06/2025 16:48

Not silly at all. I would pack a vest. a sleepsuit and a cardi. Then you can do just the vest if it's super hot, just the sleepsuit it it's cooler, and a combination of 2 or 3 if needed. Hope all goes well.

Bitzee · 25/06/2025 16:54

Pack a short sleeved vest and sleepsuit and decide on the day based on the weather.
Boiling hot- just the vest
Very warm- just the sleepsuit
Cooler weather- vest + sleepsuit

Also I’d have a large muslin to hand that you can also use as a breathable blanket in the car once the air con kicks in.

We put ours in a single layer sleepsuit for coming home during the 2022 heatwave. Pick something easy to dress them in rather than something fancy. Don’t go for just the vest as the car seat straps will rub against their legs. We didn’t use a blanket as it was only a 10 min ride. In hospital they still put her in a blanket.

Pigletsstripeyjumper · 25/06/2025 18:21

Depends on how quickly you’re released.
If your baby is less than 48 hours old they’ll be less good at regulating their body temperature than if they are 48hours +. I’d plan for a short sleeved vest and thin cotton sleepsuit and thin cotton hat if it’s been less than 48hours and just a vest if it’s been longer. But just ask the midwives at the hospital. They’ll know what’s reasonable considering the age of your baby and the heat that day.
