Placenta praevia

Hello,
I'm looking for some advice I had my 20 week scan and they found placenta praevia that is fully obstructed and most likely won’t move,

I was just wondering if anyone has been in a similar situation and what have you done regarding work, I’m an ITU nurse so I’m on my feet all day and fairly busy

What did the sonographer tell you?

my friend had full placenta preavia, she wasn’t put on bed rest unless she had a bleed (she never did thankfully) but was admitted to hospital around 36/37 weeks and section at 39.

So the sonographer referred me to my midwife who said light duties at work, I can go on one small walk a day and no lifting or going to the gym
but it’s trying to find out the grey area of light duties in the nhs, as I spend most of my 12 hours on my feet and have stressful situations to deal with as well as rolling patients

Can you self-refer to occupational health? Is there an alternative role you could be deployed into or shorter shifts?

I had a robust plan put in place when I returned to work as a nurse following surgery. Light duties is too vague.

I had full placenta previa (21 years ago), so I knew I would need a c-section fairly early on. I mainly drove for my job so wasn't on my feet all day like you though. I bled at 32 weeks, went to hospital, came home and bled again at 34 weeks. Unfortunately I developed pre-eclampsia too and had an emergency c-section at 34 weeks. My daughter weighed 4lbs 🥺. She's a healthy 21 year old now though and is 37 weeks pregnant herself!
I would ask for a risk assessment at work. I hope everything goes smoothly for you.

You need an OH referral and risk assessment. On my DHs ward you'd be put on paperwork etc until you give birth.

You need to go straight to occupational health. They will support you. Best of luck

I had grade 4 pp with both pregnancies (I think I must have a womb shaped like a banana or something 🙄). No bleeding with either but I was admitted to hospital at 35 weeks with dd1 and 37 weeks with dd2. Elective c-sections with both at 38 weeks.

AdeptBalonz · 17/06/2025 18:11

Thank you all so much, I’ve gone to OH I just need my manager to do the referral otherwise it doesn’t stand, it’s just so frustrating how vague light duties are and there aren’t any clear guidelines

I had it, I was still going to the gym until 30 weeks pregnant.....I had a bleed at 37 weeks and stayed in hospital until they delivered me at 37+6.....but she was born after 4 losses so they were being more careful

Sorry for your losses and so glad this pregnancy worked out.

I had full placenta praevia with DC2 & 3

DC2 I went to 33.5 before I had a big bleed, was then in hospital until she was 37+3 and I had a CS.

With DC3 I was first admitted at 24 weeks, then 26, 3 times in week 31 and the admitted at 33 weeks and she was born at 36+1

I have a desk job, but with DC3 after the week 26 admissions was only allowed to work part time from home, not push a shopping trolley, not lift DC1 & 2, after week 31 admissions I was told not to be further away from the hospital than home

I had this which was discovered at 18 weeks. It wasnt full praevia but like 80% they discussed all my options and explained lots of bed rest and a section etc. Went in to triage around 30 weeks as I suddenly couldn't feel baby move and my placenta had completely shifted to the front. I honestly feel like i felt it move it was weird. Anyway lots of monitoring for the next 9 weeks and all was well. Look after yourself op and look forward to that beautiful bundle of joy 😍

You need an assessment by Occupational health. Refrain from manual handling of patients until they have advised.
Manual handling with placenta previa is dangerous for you and baby. If something eere to happen while manual handing patients and other staff would also be at risk.
Occupational health should advise what tasks you can and can't do and would advise your manager what adjustments are needed. Your manager needs to put you on light duties, if they can't do that on your normal ward they need to consider moving you to an alternative role / environment.
Please speak to Occ health ASAP.

I think TBH you will have to be put on office duties/clinic only because you absolutely cannot be rolling, lifting or pushing heavy people/items at all. I bled for the first time (placenta praevia with percreta) at 26 weeks after picking up my toddler and spent most of the next two months in hospital on bed rest, but there were several women in with me with praevia (no accreta) who hadn't lifted anything and had just bled for no reason. Also I am sure they probably mentioned the no sex rule to you too, but just in case they haven't it is absolutely off the cards now.
