Hi mums,

After 2years of trying to conceive we received good news of getting positive on pregnancy test... I had to self refer myself to antenatal care because my GP is not very good or take forever to book appointment. Even after self referral I am still awaiting for appointment from midwife... PS I live in chatham, medway. How long is the first appointment? & how long do they take to get results of the tests??

How many weeks pregnant are you? Your first appointment is usually between week 8-10, typically closer to 10. First appointment is about an hour long & is just lots of background health questions really.

Nhs due date calculated to 7 weeks... I am kind of expecting a call to get the appointment booked to be honest, so I have time to book time off work...

Ah if you’re only 7 weeks it could be a little while yet. I think I got my appointment through about a week before and my appointment was at 9.5 weeks ish for this pregnancy.

Your employer legally has to allow you the time for appointments so don’t worry about that.

I don’t know of anywhere in the UK that would do an appointment at 5 or 6 weeks on the NHS. You could book a private scan if you wanted to for 6 weeks, but your first standard NHS appointment is 8-10 weeks, usually closer to 10 x

As PP said, appointments are usually around 8-10 weeks. The speed in which they offer you an appointment depends on the trust/hospital.

I referred at 11DPO and had a response the following week for an appointment when I was exactly 9 weeks.

It’s standard to self refer to midwifery service in my area not go through GP. First appointment was approx 10 weeks, I got a letter separately with the date of my first scan.

The only ones I’ve known with earlier appointments were friends who had issues conceiving / had experienced previous loss.

Il probably be at the same hospital as you. I self referred, then received a call about a week later to book in the initial phone apt at 8 weeks and then a clinic apt at 9 weeks.

I've had my booking appointments between 7 and 11 weeks
The booking appointment is probably the longest of the midwife appointments. They will ask you about yours and your families health. They will weight and measure your height, get you to give a breath sample to check for CO to check if you smoke. Depending on the time of year you might be offered flu and COVID vaccines.
They will ask personal questions to surrounding your relationship, if you are related, do you have space for baby etc
They run some blood tests including your blood type, routine tests for things like anaemia and test for some stis and hiv.

On the basis of this you will be assigned as high or low risk. If high risk you'll be seen by an Obstetrician to see if there is anything else they need to consider in pregnancy and birth. I'm high risk due to medication and mental health. The bulk of my care is still with the midwife and I can give birth in the midwife led unit but I need a few extra checks because of medication and there's a support plan in place should I struggle with my mental health so it's not necessarily the case that low/high risk will significantly change your pregnancy experience.

They will ask which hospital you would like your care at and go through the consent form for the trisomy screening that forms part of the dating scan.

Thank you mums!!!
Funny thing i was referred for infertility due to ttc for more than 2 years since March & am still awaiting for their call & even more funny thing I've had positive test in early June.... so I wonder who will call me first? The gynaecologist or the midwife ??? I can only laugh at this situation!!!

Sounds normal to me, I had to self refer all 3 times. It’s easy and the normal route nowadays. You don’t need to see GP. You don’t often get a call. Usually a booking in appt and scan date. First appt is about an hour long going through medical history

LER2023 · 16/06/2025 16:29

Hi, still take the gynecology appointment if it comes through. It may mean that they help support you through your pregnancy.

Like everyone has been saying your booking appt is usually 8 - 10 weeks, roughly around the 10 week mark.

Ive had 3 miscarriages all around the 6 weeks mark and i asked fir an earlier appointment to get the ball rolling to make sure everything is viable and i was seen on an urgent at 7 weeks with a scan that same day.

All my other appointments have been around the 9 week mark. Dont be worried about not having a midwife appt, it will come! It took me almost a year to see the miscarriage clinic (approx 10 months) which apparently house in the same place that fertility clinics would be.

They arent very quick with referrals. They say ita 8 - 12 weeks. Dont listen to them.
