Low PAPP-A given extra checks

Hello :)

I found out I have Low PAPP-A (0.39) Which gives a risk for pre-eclampsia. I am 14 weeks pregnant. my midwife called me to discuss this and told me I would be seen by a consultant and have extra growth scans. also I'm on aspirin now.

My question is, I dont have Pre-eclampsia yet, just the Low PAPP-A, Are these extra checks done because theres a good chance I will get it. or is it just precaution?
Later on is there a possibility that my PAPP-A will be ok ( if thats even a thing that can happen?) Meaning I wont need extra checks anymore?

I'm not overly concerned as I know this is quite common. and I'm definitely not complaining of the extra checks. I'm curious more than anything.

Anyone who's been through this - id love to hear how it panned out for you. I will ask more question at my 16 week appt of course.

Thank you :)

Hi. I have low PAPP-A also. Have been on asprin from 12 weeks. The extra checks are just to ensure we dont start developing the signs of pre eclampsia. Those with low PAPP-A are more susceptible to it. The growth scans are also just to keep an eye on baby as the placenta "may" not work quite as well as it should but this doesn't mean it wont work absolutely fine. Just means that theres a potential for it to be less effective as the pregnancy progresses. I joined a FB group on low PAPP-A and honestly, the amount of positive stories is amazing. I was so worried at 12 weeks as my first pregnancy came with no issues. After seeing posts on the FB group, i no longer have anxiety around it. So many people having healthy weight babies and didn't develop pre eclampsia. The extra monitoring is there for a reason. Im due a growth scan at 32 weeks (skipped the 28 week one as there were no issues at my 20 and my uterine doppler scan was good). Its quite scary when they first tell you about it but this fb group really helped me:

Dont worry too much, it's only just low at 0.39 (.4 is considered fine!) mine was 0.24 and baby was totally fine, her growth slowed towards the end but I had a smooth induction at 40+3. My first pregnancy was 0.41, I had no idea it was so close to the 'low' marker. He was nearly 8lbs. So I do think the actual level may make a difference.

I had this in both of my pregnancies and both babies were born average weights at term. And I didn’t develop pre-eclampsia or have any issues at all but enjoyed the extra scans to see babies :)

Oh great to hear these stories. I didn’t realised 0.39 was only .01 away from normal either. That’s reassuring. I’m confident all will be ok. And as a plus side it get to see the baby lots more with extra scans. Can’t complain haha
